i was wondering if any of you guys have any experience with knee rehab. i have a friend who is about 6'4 360 and has just had surgery on his knee repairing a torn midiscus (spelling?) since the time of his surgery which was about a month ago, his knee is still bothering him and there is a noticable muscle size decrease. if any of you guys have any advice or tips please share.

I have a torn acl ligament and both my physical therapists say to strengthen the hams alot but do not forget the quads and calves. I opted not to have the surgery and so far so good. Just work on making all the muscles around the knee strong.

i had knee surgery as well about 15 years ago..i was in a soft cast and bed ridden for a month..needless to say when they took the cast off my knee cap was actually wider than my quad..it was scary..

anyway the first order was to work on restoring range of motion after that i worked on strengthening the quad back up..i di however go to physical therapy 3 times a week for a long time plus i did my own exercises as well..

i missed a full season of hockey and it prolly cost me a spot on a division I team but oh well shit happens..Bottom line im sure you can get some decent advice on here but youur friend really should seek out a professional for rehab..

My experience with Knee Injuries

I blew my knee out when I was 15 years old playing highschool football. I didn't tear any ligaments (The way the doctor explained it to me was that instead of the ACL tearing, the section of bone where it was connected broke off, leaving a peice of bone partially broken off.) Instead of surgically correcting it, they opted to put a stove-pipe cast from my hip to ankle. Looking back I really wish they had given me surgery since I'm still having a lot of problems with my knee. Occasionally when I run hard, pivot, job, walk etc I get a sharp pain in my knee and it locks for a few seconds.

Anyways,on to the reason I posted this,

When I got my cast taken off (only 6 weeks) I still had a reasonably strong leg but my knee felt terribly unstable. (most of it was probably mental)
Doctor told me Physiotherapy wasn't necessary (what a guy) so I went to my local gym and asked a trainer to hlep make up a program that would loosen up and strengthen my knee.

I found stationary bike a great way to regain my range of motion without putting and pressure on my knee.

For leg exercises I started using simple machines, Leg Extension,Leg Curl,Hip Sled with 0 weight (Not even the bar for extensions or Curls, just sitting on the machine and going through the motions). I could do these exercises with weight but it would cause a great deal of tightness in my knee. After a few weeks my knee loosened up and I cuold go back to training hard.

This post was probably completely useless, aw well,I tried.

Hi everyone!

I had a torn ACL ligament last year and before that knee arthroscopic three times. Rehabilitation were very interesting and stressful :) but with the right knee strengthening exercises for rehab and motivation is simply. After surgery for cruciate ligament rehabilitation I needed 4 months. On the Internet was little exercises. I decided that I drew all the exercises and share them with others. These exercises should do before and after knee surgery or injury.

I wish you a full rehabilitation! squidoo.com/knee-strengthening-exercises2
I will add more exercises.

Well if its that bad he needs to go to doctor again. And there will be significant muscle loss. He hasnt used it in a month. Relax it all takes time. Rushing it will never make it heal faster. Body is a wierd thing. What some can do in 6 weeks takes others months.

A lot is going to depend on if the torn meniscus was repaired or just trimmed. The recovery for a repaired meniscus is much, much longer. A month after having my meniscus trimmed I had full use of my knee back. Since then I've done a lot of stabilization stuff (pistols) and stretching/rolling of the tissues around the knee, on top of generaly trying to keep strength balanced.

I've also visited a PT a few times. When you need them they can be miracle workers.
