Help with setting up Bitcoin

I've noticed that most of the sources these days want you to use Bitcoin. I've never used it and am not computer savvy at all. Anyone have any explanation how Bitcoin even works and how to set it up? Is it legitimate?

I've found bitcoin to be pretty simple to use for small purchases.
I use a service called Circle, just google them.
There are some bitcoin services that are a bit shady, and users find their money going MIA
