Helping a friend to cut/bulk and possibly compete

My friend is Japanese with limited English skills so I'm filling in for him.

His long-term goal is to compete in the Japan Men's Physique. He's not sure whether to cut or bulk. From his pictures, I would say bulk. Short-term he wants to understand proper lifting routines, movements, form etc. Also understanding dieting strategies and why/why not eat certain foods, take certain supplements. Get a much bigger understanding of what it takes to get big and to lean out and be healthier. He has been in the gym for a couple of years but it's always been random exercises.

Some obstacles:

1. I would introduce him to 3J but he's got the language barrier. Everything right now is going through me. Not much information in Japanese compared to English. At some point I hope to get him with 3J.
2. His work requires him to travel from one part of Japan to another. He's somewhere different every other week. When in town he's able to get to the gym. If there's a gym of the same chain near his hotel he's able to get to the gym. But there are times when nothing is close by.
3. He can eat more than I can if we sat down and tried to pack as much food away as possible. Yet, he's still lean IMO. His daily diet is not really healthy, lots of breaded deep-fried pork cutlet (Or other cuts of meat/fish/chicken) with bowls of white rice. He's learning to break from that and eat healthier.
4. This is Japan, and he most certainly will have to drink alcohol. I've got it a little easier than him. With his job there's more pressure.

Stats:

40 years old
171 cm
76 kg (Weight first thing in the morning)
BF% Not sure, but the electronic tester says 23%

I gave him my copy of MI40. He's learning from that for now as far as what to do in the gym. He works in a department store that has him lifting and carrying all day so he's pretty active on the whole. This is about all the info I have for now. His keeping a journal of the food he is currently eating to get a better idea of calories/macros.

If he isn't going to commit and clean up his diet -- including removing/reducing alcohol from it -- there probably is no point in trying to cycle. Plus he has the obstacle of flying on planes where he will have difficulty bringing gear with him. Not being able to hit the the gym consistently is another problem. Getting on AAS sounds like it would just end up making him fatter if he is not able to correct these issues.

Your friend looks like he could make plenty of Natty Gains if he were to just correct these issues. He doesn't need AAS at this point. I would like to see him make these changes first and keep them in place for a year before considering a cycle.

There was no plan on putting him on a cycle. Natty was the plan from the start. After a few years, if he's interested, then that'll be a different thread. His travels are by train (Bullet Train).

Right now he's in the process of cleaning up his diet. We're getting him a Foreman grill and a small rice cooker so he can prep meals at the hotels. That's step one.

Does he look like a person that needs to bulk?

As for the gym, like I said, the only option I can think of is TRX but I'm open to suggestions.

Sorry. I shouldn't have assumed he wanted to cycle.

Tell him to stay in hotels with a fitness center.

It is up to him to decide what type of body he wants. Once he knows that his decision for bulking or cutting will be determined. Personally, I would recommend dropping some body fat first so that he can learn how his diet affects his body.

The hotels here are divided into 3 styles: Luxury, business, love. Luxury hotels would have gyms, but he's not being put up in those. The other 2 have no facilities other than the basics. Love hotels might have a little more, but not for the kind of fitness we're talking about.

He's looking at the men's physiques competition and their body types. He wants to go after that look. I'll talk to him about cutting. We'll be meeting up tomorrow to hit the gym together. Been a long time since I've ever worked out with someone. I'll see what frame of mind he's in. He seems confident he can lean out pretty quickly.

looking at his pics he has a long way to go syn.. we are talking a minimum of 18 months
