High hematocrit want to donate blood

Well,

I donated today. Really no big deal. The only thing she tested before she took my blood, was an iron test. Thanks for all your help everyone. :)

They call it "iron". They really mean HB and HCT.
You can have excellent Hemo/HCT and be deficient or low in iron (ferritin) and they wouldn't even know.

She said iron. She pricked my finger, put blood on a plastic slide looking thing, and put it in a machine. Then came back and said my iron was 16.4. She said I have good iron.

She's either has no idea what's she was talking about or you heard it wrong my man..16.4 would be hemoglobin, puts you at a average reading. Normal for men is 13.8-17.2 g/dl. You could have low iron levels due to low hemoglobin, but you would have never made it to donate if your "hemoglobin test" was not adequate.

Slight tangent here....

I've just had an hour long operation on my tricep/elbow - just wondering how much blood I would have lost during the op?

I know I was tourniqued throughout, but surely I'd have lost at least a pint?

I had a 4 inch incision made - this wasn't a keyhole procedure.

Saying this with HCT lowering in mind :)

(Is it sad that I'm thinking of lowering HCT with my fookin' arm in plaster?)

They checked hemoglobin. Not iron.

I'm just going by what she said. She said she was checking for iron. She said my iron came back at 16.4, and I had very good iron. I asked her what it means, and she said it means I must eat a lot of green veggies. I then said that I have a green drink every morning. And she said, "Oh, you mean pond water."

Are iron and hemoglobin related? Maybe she was just saying iron, so she wouldn't have to explain to me what hemoglobin is.

She also said my iron had to be at least 15 for me to donate. So I know she said iron.

On another note, she was pushing me to donate platelets in the future. As my primary reason for donating blood, was to lower my hematocrit, I'm not going to get hooked up to a machine for 90 minutes to donate platelets, if it won't benefit me.

Anyone know if donating platelets will be a benefit to someone on trt?
