Never inject on the calves, the anatomy is such that you may cause a clot. The gastrocnemius veins empty into a deep system call the Popliteal amd later the sup femoral vein. This can cause a pulmonary embolism if it grows substantial enough. These calf veins are subject to low flow, so if you cause vein trauma and lay in bed or couch, then clot can form. Once it starts, then it will grown and become larger. This can effect anyone, and this what happened to David Bloom-R.I.P.. An NBC reporter for the iraq war and weekend TODAY show host. Riding in a cramp space such as a tank or long airplane rides can cause these. So dont take a chance with the calf injections, I have seen this. I have not seen the fat emboli, but is a debate that I wont argue again and always aspirate. This is specific only to the calf region injections, b/c you can compress a vein and cuase low flow to get even worse> leading to a coagulation state. Very low risk I conceed, but better safe than sorry.
