How often should I get sore?

Should I be getting sore after every day working at the gym? If I don't get sore, does that mean I was lacking or didn't do enough? I am starting to feel like I'm not doing enough in the gym when I don't get sore... I am a beginner so I still don't have a wide variety of workouts that I do, but I always try new things... Any advice would help, thanks in advance.

Also: today is chest day so if I can get some advice before going into it I'd be ecstatic, I want to feel it!

Just because you are not sore doesn't mean it wasn't a productive workout. However, I always go for sore. Best pain ever is the the soreness you get the next day after working a body part.

i agree you should be getting sore, but i dont believe it has antyhing to do with volume or diff exercises. It has more to do with intensity-and how heavy you go.

Ok, I just got back from my chest workout and I can barely move my arms... I think I have my routine down now, I went on youtube and looked for the most effective chest workout and I ended up choosing this. (the trainer at the gym added some to it as well)

Db flat press 3x
Db flat fly 3x
Db incline press 4x
Db incline fly 4x
Db decline press 3x
Db decline fly 3x
Cable crossovers 4x

Did all til failure around 8-12 reps (some 6)

I tried to end my routine with some push up's but I could only squeeze out one of them, so I think I'm going to be sore for the next couple days.

How does this routine look?

looks much better-but im a fan of 5 no more than 8 reps on working sets when trying to gain

The only problem I have with that is when I only do up to about 6 to failure every time, I leave the gym thinking I didn't do enough... Is this common?

you have to go heavy enough to do that low of reps-and still feel it

the 5x5 routine is famous for building mass, although i dont think it should be implemented til you hit a plateau

also when i do incline press i do flat fly-when i do flat press i do incline fly

either way your routine looks good-im just saying i would go heavier-if you can do 8 reps its time to add 10-20lbs.

i was always taught not to do incline and flat dumbells in same day. always rotate flat bar bench, incline dumbell. barbell incline flat dumbell

I started to feel that way bro, like I was not doing enough at the gym. I started to lift heavier with lower reps and I was sore bro. But I know what you mean becouse I stoped getting sore for a week or so.

Oh man I am feeling the soreness! About to be on my way to do back in a few, any good back workouts someone can suggest? This is what I'm thinking:

Pull ups
Lat pull downs + reverse handed
Db rows
Seated cable rows

critique or suggestions welcome...

deadlifts bro-do em

Man, there was a little voice in my head taunting me to do deadlifts but they are just so damn intimidating. I am uncertain of my form and I really don't want to fuck myself up. But yes, I know every bodybuilder HAS to do them; I am just a little pussy right now when it comes to them, I will next week for sure.

On another note, I did your 5x5 routine today and omfg bro! I am so god damned pumped its ridiculous, I look twice my normal size right now, feels great.

Taking a couple days off for rest; then back to legs.

I forgot to ask, also, when is the best time to do deadlifts? Beginning or end of workout? I know for sure I never would have been able to do them at the end of todays workout, but also, I don;t know if they will be too hard on me to be able to do the rest of my routine with full potential... Maybe I'm over-thinking it?

That is the point. Open your days with the biggest compound lift. Squats, Deadlifts, Bench, Standing Military or Arnold Press. You can't open a leg day with squat, do it correctly, and then have enough left in the tank to blaze through 7 other random exercises. You want to hit these big lifts hard. I start my back day with deadlifts and love it.

ya i agree with the lawyer-always start with the big lifts. deads on back days. aint nuttin to em but to do em, start light-form is VERY important with those. once you have your form down then go heavy
