where i live there are 2 schools.. one is a gracie bjj school(wont let anyone fight an MMA fight till they hit purple belt) the other is an ATT affiliated school..but the instructors are certified to teach phase 1 but they are going back to fla to get phase too.. now keep in mind that i have visited both schools and am 30 years old..i wanna get in shape and maybe have some MMA fights..what do yall think? i can post links if yall want me too..or if it helps

do you have any previous training? do you prefer to stand and bang or are you interested in ground fighting?
what im getting at here is, go where you'll get more enjoyment out of the training. you'll stick with it longer and get more out of it. do a month at each, and see what you like best.

i have no previous training... these schools have faced each other before.. and the gracie school is 4-0 against the ATT school but.. the ATT school just started this curriculum in march..

A gracie BJJ puple belt will take you about htree years of consistant training thats along if you wanna have some MMA fights.

ATT is a better rounded school IMO. I don't have ties to either. I echo what dcorti said about the time. It will take you at least that to get a purple belt so you'd be sitting before fighting for them for a while. Each school is different though. Just because it's ATT or Gracie doesn't mean the world either way. Try both out. I know that ATT gives a week or two free here in FL. Instructors and students make a school/camp. If all the other guys at the school are dicks then you won't enjoy training and won't learn as much.

Go to both school. Tell them you are interested in getting into MMA or BJJ or whatever it is and see if they will give you a trial week and try everything out. See how the classes are run, check out the other people at the gym, see the trainers.

After you have been to both places and tried them out, make your decision.

It is hard to judge a school by a website and school name.

As stated above, obtaining your purple belt will take AT LEAST 3 years and thats if you commit to going every week. Personally, I think thats kinda ridiculous to put that type of stipulation on an MMA fighter BUT since alot of guys try going into it with no experience and you do represent their "name", kind of understandable. Now, with that in mind, if you want to fight MMA, you'll also need to devote alot of time to Muay Thai and Boxing/striking as well as Wrestling since you have no base. When you add up all the time you'll have to spend on that, it could take you 4-5 years to get your purple belt. I'd think about ATT unless you really want to be a BJJ fighter and concentrate on that. Age is no a factor if your in great shape and injury free (unless your like 50..lol) but seriously, at 30 you've only a got so many years so hit now and hit it hard!

Any training is good training - I am biased - I train at a Gracie school - Its my second gym and I have found their instructors to be more highly skilled and effective - your grappling will be elite - additionally they provide exceptional Muay Thai and Boxing training - You may have to work harder and longer to fight but you will not be ill prepared - being ill prepared in this world can physically side track you longer than exhibiting the patience and discipline - superior tequnique and skill dominate

Great post! Very true.

You should have at least a legit Purple belt in BJJ before stepping into a Cage.. anything less you are asking to get yo ass submitted... 3 years... no it took me 2 well 2 and 2 months of consistent training.. but it isnt easy but when they all come out and beat you one after another with that belt it is the GREATEST FEELING IN THE WORLD !!!!

You should try out the ATT school though especially at ur age if you want to get in the cage anytime soon... but train at both so you can be an all around well rounded fighter...

I am coming back from an injury and I train at 3 different places.. its all in what they offer... go after your weak points and slowly move up from there.. evalute your strong points and keep them fresh while always forever training and improving your game. MMA is like a chess match.. you set your pieces up for attack and when the time is right.. checkmate !!! *Tap out, choke out, or Knock out*
