Is less really more?

I talked to my nutritionist about my routines for working it recently and he said that I was doing way to many sets. He advised me rock less so that I rip the muscles and work them and not pushing to much so that I allow them to grow.I was just wondering what everyones input was. I work really hard and have a great routine but my nutritionist said that I will see more size gains this way.

It depends on your experience level and your split,,if you only work out a muscle once a week it can get hit harder than if you train it twice a week. I se alot of guys spend way too much time in the gym. You should be in and out in an hour

Your nutrionists is right. I see guys come in to do a body part, and the will do 5 sets flat, 4 sets incline, 4 sets decline, 4 sets flies. Now for the genetic freak bodybuilders who have been juicing for years, this might work. But for everyday guys this is wayy to much. Your gains will be limited, compared to a lesser routine. 5x5 is the way to go to see great strength and size gains.

How about posting up some stats and an example/approximate routine? You say its a GREAT ROUTINE which states clearly you think your doctor has no idea what they are talking about. So if you are so sure, why are you asking if you are not open minded?

Post up, for all we know they are saying 9 sets is too much for back! Not very clear here.

Yeah dude muscle isolation is what hes trying to say. instead of banging out every diff lift every which way just burns you out slowing it down and isolating the muscle im working on has changed my gains completely.

I hit everything once a week and never go more then 12 sets per body part! I see guys come in the gym all day doing 2hrs of chest and wonder why they aint getting huge?

Keep it simple.

Nailed it ^^^

I typically just follow what my body is telling me. I don't push myself more than I feel that I should. I tend to stick to lower reps while doing compound movements (< 5 reps/set) so if I'm feeling pretty good on set 4 or 5, I'll just continue with another set or two.

I'm in and out in 1 to 1.5 hours, but I only lift 3 days a week.

I follow heavy weight, low reps. In and out 5x5 is great. Looking at 531. IMO no need to do a ton of reps and sets.
