I looked through PubMed and found this meta study, which is really a "we need more studies" type of study. The authors reviewed all the studies on NAC up to its writing (2006) and posted their findings and they found the direct action of NAC to be inconclusive as to if there is any positive effect. However they did say that NAC breaks down into cysteine (which allows glutathione to be created and to function). Glutathione is arguably the most powerful anti-oxidant in the body and is very good for the liver and a great many other body organs. In fact, low levels of Cysteine and / or Glutathione are very, very bad for you.
