When you think of bodybuilding and hormones I know what you're thinking. ANABOLIC STEROIDS! EXOGENOUS HORMONES!

Exogenous Hormones - Hormones that originate from outside the body (Injectable and oral anabolic steroids are Exogenous Hormones)

Another thing that comes to mind for us all is......

TESTOSTERONE AND ESTROGEN! WHY? Because these hormones are VERY IMPORTANT and are known for making or breaking you.

Testosterone (exogenous and endogenous) is known for increasing muscle mass, being the base of male steroid cycles, and.....CAUSING ESTROGEN TO RISE! We all know of and fear GYNECOMASTIA, FAT GAIN AND WATER RETENTION!

Estrogen (endogenous rises when Testosterone is administered or even naturally when people aren't properly conditioned, have health problems, bad diets, or too much stress) Its known for causing side effects like acne, mood swings, a decrease in muscle mass, a decrease in bone density, low sex drive, headaches, gynecomastia.

Lets talk about natural hormones. On of off anabolic steroids, your bodies hormones are effected by your diet, your training, steroid usage, sleep, and stress.

I'm going to go over some of these hormones to give you a better idea.

Bodybuilding releases Testosterone, Estrogen, Human Growth Hormone, Insulin, Glucagon, and Cortisol. Just to name some!

Testosterone - a natural steroid hormone that stimulates development of male secondary sexual characteristics, produced mainly in the testes, but also in the ovaries (women) and adrenal cortex. This hormone can increase the growth of muscle mass, strength, bone density, bone maturation, deepening of the voice, and growth of facial and body hair.

Estrogen - A natural female steroid hormone that is produced by the ovaries and, in lesser amounts, by the adrenal cortex, placenta, and male testes (NOT GOOD FOR MEN). Estrogen helps control and guide sexual development, including the physical changes associated with puberty (IT CAN PLAY A ROLE IN BOTH MEN AND WOMEN).

Human Growth Hormone - a naturally occurring polypeptide hormone that is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. Human Growth Hormone helps with the mental and physical development of humans. This hormone can help you look and feel younger. It can help restore, maintain, or build your skin, hair, nails, eyes, muscle mass, and bone density.

Insulin - a natural hormone in the body produced in the pancreas. It regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats by helping the absorption of glucose from the blood to skeletal muscles and fat tissue and by causing fat to be stored rather than used for energy. Unless you have an insulin disorder, insulin is provided within the body in a constant proportion to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic. When blood glucose levels fall below a certain level. The body begins to use stored glucose as an energy source through glycogenolysis, which breaks down the glycogen stored in the liver and muscles into glucose, which can then be utilized as an energy source. This is something to get tested and discuss with your healthcare physician.

Glucagon - is a natural peptide hormone, produced by alpha cells of the pancreas, that raises the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream. Its effect is opposite of insulin, which lowers the glucose concentration. The pancreas releases glucagon when the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream falls too low. Glucagon causes the liver to convert stored glycogen into glucose. Which is released into the bloodstream. High blood glucose levels stimulate the release of insulin. Insulin allows glucose to be taken up and used by insulin-dependent tissues. Glucagon and insulin are part of a feedback system that keeps blood glucose levels at a stable level.

Cortisol - is a natural steroid hormone, a glucocorticoid, which is produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex. It is released in response to stress and a low level of blood glucose. Its functions are to increase blood sugar through gluconeogenesis, to suppress the immune system, and to aid the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. Too much of this hormone being produced can be a problem. It can cause you fatigue, irritation, agitation, headaches, fat loss, muscle wasting, and depression.

Everyone of these hormones plays a vital role in body functioning, and its performance. They play a role in your metabolism, how you feel; mentally and physically, how well you build muscle, how well you burn fat, your overall well being and health. If one of these hormones isn't functioning properly you could have problems inside and outside of your body.

Before you start any kind of bodybuilding or fitness related program. Setup an appointment with your local healthcare physician and explain to them that you want to start an exercise program. And if your starting an exercise program. You should start a nutritional program to compliment it.

Discuss all of this with your healthcare physician and ask for a physical and a male hormone blood panel test. Have them explain to you the results and figure out if you are healthy enough for physical activity.
