I managed to put up 455lbs for a solid 8 reps, ass to the floor no belt yesterday. It was a little scary though, I have a crazy bad cough, so I took a tylenol 3(with codine) before I went in so I could breathe, but on the 2nd rep I got really dizzy and couldnt focus, so pretty much did the last 6 reps blind. It felt like I might have had 10 reps, but by 8 I was freaked out that my vision wasnt clearing.
Once I racked the bar everything went back to normal, but damn, that was a little more intense then I planned

I thought I was kicking ass in the gym, now I feel like a complete weakling. You have inspired me to work harder.

atta boy bro . now get over your pride and get a good belt before you end up hurt .when a belt is used properly its not strapped down so tight that its the only thing supporting your core/abs/etc. its left loose enough for you to push out against with your abs to build up pressure against . you still get core development and strength but with the added benefit of protection .

thanks guys
dadawg, I wont touch a belt. Years ago I went to see a surgeon as I thought I had a hernia. Turns out I dont, but I have a weak muscle down there. He explained how the belt builds up pressure in the abdominal wall there, so if you have a weak muscle, all that pressure looking for a way to get out will blow a hole right through it

rofl..and for the record PB thread on liquid cialis or v has nothing to do with NS lol..i actually found me a PL babe :)

thanks again, my goal was 500lbs for 6-8 reps by the time I'm done bulking, which would be around June/july, including the times I have planned to back off a little I figure I should get there no problem

Good lifts bro, I kind of agree with dawg on this one, your core is strong as fuck, I have seen your abs, lol. I don't see how wearing a belt on your last set would do anything but help, but you obviously know what you are doing.

thanks. funny thing is when you've gone this long without a belt, it actually screws with my sets to try and use one, and the hernia thing is my biggest fear. And it really does kill 2 birds with one stone, as my abs on stage are pretty crazy, and thats from squatting and deadlifting without a belt

you say that when you try to use a belt it screws you up , how tight are you wearing it and are you wearing it on the lower or middle part of the abs ?

its been about 8 years since the last time I wore one, I wore it really tight and high if I remember correctly

i wear mine exactly opposite of that , lower down and it doesnt really feel tight until i flex my abs/midsection to squat/pull/etc.
i dont rely on the belt to hold my midsection tight , i use my abs/core for that . the belt is just there to flex against which helps build up pressure there and support me .
i consider my ab muscles very large , as i said in another post today they show well even at a fairly high BF and i do just about the least amount of actual ab work possible lol . i attribute the large abs to my squatting and deadlifting .
dont get me wrong you are a hoss in the gym , there is no doubt about that . the problem is you wont be young forever sooner or later you MAY have to use a belt for your back because a hernia isnt nearly as scary as blowing out a disk to me .
do a little experimenting with the belt when you get ready , start with the belt loose enough that its barely even snug and do a set when the weight of the bar is on your back and you flex the core/abs the belt should tighten up some ,if the belt doesnt hinder you there the next set tighten it up just a notch and do another work set , so on and so forth until you get good support without hindering your workout . i cant lift worth a damn with the belt cranked down like i see others do , hell its hard to squat when you cant breathe plus you cant tighten your core up with the belt that tight .
im not you [ i have more hair :) ] so i cant make the decision to use a belt for you but i feel that sooner or later due to age or tweaking a back that you will have to use one if you continue to train balls to the walls like you do so before you give up on belts alltogether try useing a belt like i said , a little looser and maybe even try moveing it down lower on the abs . you didnt get to where you are know without being a bulldog when it comes to experimenting with your gear and workouts so im confident that if theres a way to use a belt that makes you happy you will find it .
did i mention i have more hair than you :)

great post Dawg..i know you recommended a belt to me and i just added one recently (after tweaking the back without one) and use it exactly in the way you just described..
