Newbie MMA Training

Hi Guys,

I am thinking about getting some training for MMA, not to become a fighter but for self defense purposes. I have few questions:

1. Do I have to take BJJ and Muay Thai Separately to train for MMA or MMA training itself incorporates both of these martial arts?

2. Is there any good MMA training centers in West End of Toronto, Canada?

I have no background in any martial arts, but I have quiet a bit of experience in weight training :)

It all depends where you train. Some gyms offer different classes on different nights with different coaches that specialize in different aspects of MMA. Just google martial arts in your area and go check it out.

I train them separate but we have a class that incorporates the two together which is an mma class. As a beginner you need to do them separate so you can learn. Jits is difficult to learn by its self.

If you are not trying to be a pro fighter then the most important thing is to find a gym where you feel like you fit in. If it is a reputable MMA gym you will learn everything you need to so that you can take care of yourself. As long as you show up, train, do the drills and try to learn you will learn everything you need to so that you can protect yourself. When picking an MMA gym the most important thing is finding one that you feel comfortable calling it your home and feeling like you belong there. The guys who are there are going to become close friends. You will spend at least a year being hurt by everyone in there so if you are with a bunch of cocky guys then you may feel a little more pain that you need to. You want to find guys who care about the new guy, want to help them learn and when they put a submission on they are nice enough not to crank but hold and give you a chance to learn how to defend it. You want a gym full of friendly guys that you have something in common with that you will be happy getting close to.
FYI, don't go in expecting to be a badass. Go in expecting to be hurt bu these guys and be happy about it. In my gym we very often have guys coming in who thing they are the big man on the block who are ready to step in the cage and think they are tuff shit. If they have an attitude we put them in their place and when they get humbled in that manner they normally do not come back. Go in and just try to learn and be respectful. If you see somebody bow as they walk on the mat then do the same. After you roll always say thank you to the guy who beat your ass. You will not only gain respect but you will learn faster as well.
Also, dont ever talk about "this one time when you got in a fight and did this or that". That is very annoying.

^^ This x2. That's when you know they need to get humbled

Thanks guys, so I need to find a good gym and then stick to it, this brings to my second point in my original post :)

Any good gyms in Mississauga? or Brampton?

This is me as well^^^^^they will not put you with us unless you want to be a crash test dummy

They are right, When I first started MMA I jumped right into the MMA classes. I thought i would be fine with a very strong boxing/MT background. Boy was that a mistake! At the very least start with some JJ/wrestling classes.

There are MMA courses for beginners. I would also recommend doing boxing, grappling or kickboxing , as it will help you in MMA.
