One rep max vs. repping out

for the last few weeks i have been doing something different with bench instead of going heavy and doing 3-5 reps I switched and me and my partner have been doing as many reps as we can with 225 and 185 ..... a month ago I did a single with 300 and in the last 2 workouts I got 225x13 ..... a few people told me that for a 300 single my reps with 225 should be around 15-16. What do you guys think?

I've always switched my routine up with bench pressing. Never really cared about 1rm. I would use dumbbells one day, straight bar next, lock outs, mix them together a lil, etc... I just made sure I didn't do too many sets so I didn't overtrain.. you'll get there. I never power lifted so I don't know if that's what your looking to do...

I took about 2 months off of all barbell work and did strick dumbells. You use more stabilizer muscles with dumbells which will improve your strength and control with heavier weights once you return to barbell. After about 2 months off of barbell I was pressing near 40 lbs more on barbell then I had ever done before. hope this helps

Honestly, your 1 RM doesn't really tell you that much about reps IMO, its a different type of strength. Personally, I can 1 RM bench at 280 but only get 225 up 8 times. so IDK
