Overrated exercises

Some exercises become so common that few people take the time to question their validity. Perhaps they began as specialty exercises intended for use in specific contexts -- by patients in rehab, for example, or by advanced bodybuilders who need the most challenging variations of certain movements. Some trainers noticed the exercises worked for those specific trainees in those specific situations and started pushing the workouts toward the middle, to be used by everyone. Over time, the exercises become a bit too popular, and they end up vastly overrated.

IMO overtraining biceps and triceps are quite common and those tiny muscles can be trained by other compound exercises. Not saying to ignore them but do not spend 45 minutes on them at the gym. It's all about the chest, back, shoulders and legs!

I can't squat any longer since I herniated two lower disks in my back so I do leg presses and they feel great on my back not a problem. So am I wrong? Are leg presses worse than squats?

Free weights are normally better. With that being said you're doing the right exercise for your quads due to your injury.

When my lower back is a lil sore I play it safe and do presses or extensions in leau of squats.

hey zgx thanks for the input wondering if you know anything about zercher squats? Someone was saying that those are great for people with a herniated disk.

Never done them, at least not yet but I hear they reduce pressure on the spine as compared to a standard squat. With herniated disks I'd play it safe :) - the benefits of doing a squat with free weights are in my book incomparable to days or even weeks of back pain that may keep you away from working out and taking away all that you've worked so hard for :)

That is so very true and I need to get over it and come to the conclusion I can't squat any longer. Thanks for the reply.
