Yeah I doubt HIIT would even be effective on an empty stomach. You are just asking to pass out. Early morning cardio on an empty stomach should be light and 20-30 minutes in duration. I have a protein shake(1 scoop) and 8 oz of gatorade or some fruit, plenty of water and vitamin C. Then 30 minutes later have breakfast.
I do cardio (incline hike on treadmill) within 1/2 hour of waking up. I take some liquid aminos on the way out the door so I am not cannibalizing. I eat my first meal as soon as I get home. I don't do cardio right after my workout. I have a shake, shower, eat and rest.
Works good for me.
