Post Workout Shake or Real Meal?

I always see shakes favorored as the post workout meal of choice because they are easy and quick to digest.

Is there any disadvandage to me eating a big ground beef and rice meal post workout?
 
Not the expert, but I believe it is fine. Real wholesome food always trumps a shake. However, if you want the best... drink a shake while downing that food. Get some solid substance and ungodly amount of protein.

the ground beef would be a disadvantage, your body is in need of amino acids fast.. and beef is slow digesting...

usually what i do pwo is a shake and a white bagel..

this gives my body the nutrients it needs fairly quickly..

but 1 to 1 1/2 hrs after that i eat a full meal...

food will always triumph shakes...

if you can replace that pwo shake with liquid egg whites, that's even better (but not so cost effective)

1. do you have to wait an hour after the shake for a meal? i usually eat within 15mins of the shake.

2. liquid egg whites - will raw egg white be the same? add how much would be needed?

1. I don't think you HAVE to do anything. Its just a matter of being full i guess.

2. I would assume yes. Liquid egg whites from what i understand are just pre-seperated. Amount would be whatever amount of protein you'd normally get I imagine. Like 3J said though... not very cost effective.

absolutely not... raw eggs have a lower bio availability then liquid pasturized ones (75% vs 95%).. do not consume raw eggs... ur wasting ur money

Now, does that mean when they are cooked they increase their bioavailability? I'm confused once again.

yup... that's exactly what it means..

and pasturized means that they cook it at low temperatures (150 degree if i recall correctly).. this makes the egg whites easier to absorb and raise bio availability
