Question about the 5x5

5x5 is great. My only problem with it is the weight increase each week for certain exericises such as dumbbells. For instance, db incline curls: 5 pounds each week? Seems a little tough (and it certainly was my second week). Same goes with anything concerning dbs.

The additional weight for your main exercises like squat, bench, deads, leg press seem reasonable, but not for the others. What do you suggest for the 2x8-10? Maybe adding 5 after 2 weeks instead of 1?

you will plateua quicker with db's because your adding 10 lbs each week not 5..i would do any 5x5 exercise with a barbell and save the dbells for the accessory work..unless you can get a hold of theose magnetic plates for the bells youre going to have a hard time progressing

totalweight still counts too..so if you do flat dbell presses with 50's (100 total) next week you have to use the 55's (110 total)..

so your adding more weight and you will stall quicker..i used them for delts until i got to a certain point and it was just too much work to hoist them up..so i switched to BB front press and i can adjust the weight 5 lbs total each week

What do you think about upping the weight on the db exercises say every 2 weeks then instead of 1? I am following needsize's weekly routine from the 5x5 thread.

if you prefer dumbells , give it a shot :)

Well, only reason I would want to use dumbbells, is because I have been told they define your muscles much better than other exercises. Maybe I should switch to barbell in order to add lesser weight each time. Thanks for your help BB.

i jsut read your post over..basically your only problem is with bi's? i wouldnt worry about it then..try it out and see how it goes

I bought some 1.25 pound magnet plates to attach to dumbbells. This way you can progress at a total of five pounds per week, just as if you were using a barbell.

that will work just fine!!!:D

Hey that's exactly what I was looking for, where can you get them? (magnetic 1.25 plates to add to dumbells) For some reason my shoulders dislike incline BP with a barbell but don't mind incline dumbells at all.

How about doing the first set or two with the new heavier weight?? For instance... your new weight is 55lbs for curls.. where your old weight was 50lb for 5X5.. this week you do 55lbs for 2 sets of 5 and then 50lbs for 3 of 5... the next week its 3 sets of 55 and 2 with 50lbs... see my pattern?????
