So tonight doing my shot i decided to try my left shoulder, upon entering my shoulder, aspirated the pin a bit and no blood, well as i pressed the syringe, my arm started hurting a bit and it felt almost like my arm was filling up or inflating, so i stopped pressing and aspirated the needle again and this time 2 big round blobs of blood came right into the syringe,

so i ask, is it normal if you pull back hard enough to get blood into the syringe? if not, then what do i look for in case i injected into the blood stream or something?

you hit a vein but it doesnt sound like you injected into it cause im sure you would have felt it if you did. i never have but from what ive read you would have felt like you were having a heart attack for a few min.

i have never got blood when aspirating and i do pull back hard enough. i dont think you can pull blood from aspirating if you didnt hit or were in a vein.

yeah im still a bit freaked out because it did feel as though my left arm was filling up, then i said wait that feels odd, and aspirated again and there was blood this time! so im gonna leave it to the pros and let my nurse do my shots from now on, no sense in having a real heart attack! plus i shot in about 100mlg before the second aspiration!

you wont have a heart attack. actually i dont even think thats right. it might be hard to breathe for a lil bit?.... im not entirely sure cause its never happened to me. ive just read about it before but i dont think im remembering it correctly. dont let this spook you. it happens to a lot of people. a nurse can do it too. last time i got a IM shot at the doctors the nurse didnt even aspirate.

It may not necessarily have been a vein. From what I understand is it can be difficult not to do a subcutaneous shot when going into the shoulder. (I'm assuming that you're doing it similar to a flu shot or other type of vaccination?) Just make sure that you're dropping it all into the muscle. A sign of blood on aspiration is either subcutaneous tissue (between outer epidermal and muscle) or you've hit a vein/artery.

Tips from a diabetic, make sure that your needle is 90deg to the skin. A variation of 5-10deg with less than 1" needle may end up in the subcutaneous layer of tissue and will will be expelled by the body because it shouldnt be there. Avoid areas with little muscle, (top of arm for example). And use sites like glutes and thighs. If you must do it in your arm, use the muscle.
