All,

I'm planning my first cycle. Really only ever done strength training (squats/deadlift/bench etc). Now looking to switch it up and build a more aesthetically pleasing physique. I'd like to use my first cycle to put on lean mass, what about routine? I was thinking of layne nortons phat....

your diet is going to play a much heavier factor then your routine.. you can still lift the way you used to if your diet is right

Hmm, I'd like to lift 5 times a week, focusing on squats/deadlifts/ohp/bench/rows with dips/chins/pullups/power shrugs/curls/skull crushers

this minus skull crushers. your tris are getting hit just fine with bench, overhead press and dips. i'd replace the skull crushers with some direct forearm work such farmers walk or holding the numbers side of a dumbbell with just your fingers, no plam touching, for as long as you can. also abs. abdominals play a crucial role in your squat and deadlift. i recommend leg raises and planks. like 3J said, diet is the key factor here. the most aesthetically pleasing body is going to be one that focuses on heavy compound lifts and dynamic lifts, and has their diet dialed in. period.

edited: btw, skull crushers are terrible on your elbows. nothing but sheering force on a fragile joint. plus you're doing much less work than if you were doing weighted dips. you'll thank me in the long run.

For pure aesthetics, I wouldnt say compounds are nearly as important (assuming you already have a decent starting block) focus more on the higher rep range (12+)
