Sleep Apnea and why we need to care

I'm calling a sleep specialist first thing in the morning. Did you ever get one blackbeard? For those of you with sleep apnea did you dream before you were treated?

I'll be getting a sleep study done as well.

Occasionally, and this never happened pre-TRT (as far as I am aware) I will be just about to fall asleep and I will wake up gasping for air. Scares the missus as well sometimes when it happens. I may have sleep apnea and steroids are known to worsen it so I will be getting a sleep study done myself.

I should have got it done before I went on TRT, however I don't plan on coming off either way. I'll post back my results, but I suspect I may have it.

Neat, I forgot about this thread and can follow up with my old post. I indeed did dream, but constantly still felt sleepy after 7-8 hours of rest. Turns out that during my sleep study I was waking up every 30 seconds as my brain would trigger a small adrenaline rush, causing my cortisol levels to climb over time.

I've now been on a CPAP for over a year, and after dialing in the appropriate pressures, can sleep and wake rested. Many folks with apnea don't even realize they're waking up, unless it's enough of a rousing to trigger the need to empty the bladder or require food.

Definitely recommend anyone that snores or wakes up tired to get a study done.

My .02c :)

I have that same nose piece and it works the very best. soon as my weight went up I was snoring really bad and my family couldn't stand it. not to mention the gasping for air.

my Doctor said sleep apnea is the absolute most under diagnosed condition there is, and also the biggest reason why mostly men take heart attacks and die in their sleep.

I just recently looked into a certain mouth piece that you can sleep with instead of the machine, its in the process now but I don't know if insurance will cover it. I am also thinking of getting one of those auto adjusting machines which to me is the best, if you lose or gain weight the machine adjusts to your breathing.

Sleep apnea is for overweight people, but brothers what we do makes us overweight too. Keep safe when it comes to this beast, if you let it go long enough you will definitely not wake up one morning. I think the last sign is when you wake up at night suddenly gasping for air.

Yes, at 220lbs/just a hair over 6" I am, medically, obese lol. I think the BMI scale is really only suitable for regular people. Then again, from memory does the heart not have to pump harder to feed muscle with blood whereas the body doesn't per se have to feed and support adipose tissue?

I have never woken up in the middle of the night gasping for air, ever. However, the waking up with a gasp for air would as far as I remember happen only when extremely stoned, I don't recall it happening whilst just regularly getting to sleep so it may be an effect from that as it does slow breathing rate down the more stoned you are. It happened again for the first time in a while about a week ago, granted I was very stoned so. Never the less, I will get a sleep study done as I have nothing to loose and everything to gain by doing so.

Also I have heard of this mouthpiece mentioned, would be far better and much more easy to take with you than a cpap machine!

i have talked to an ent about the mouthpiece.. says it doesn't work

That's a shame. Then again sleep apnea is the throat/airway muscles relaxing extensively (something of the sort) so I don't see how a mouth piece could work....

That is a type of sleep apnea. I just got my home test today. I have to go through two nights with it monitoring my sleep before I can have an accurate diagnosis. I am real sure I have it and I travel for business so I need the travel sized cpap

the easiest way to stop sleep apnea is weight loss... but that doesn't work for everyone.. some people are just structured differently.. i know if i go over 23% bodyfat it hits me.. but soon as i lose the weight my wife tells me i barely even snore..

just goes to show

The machine I have is the one that adjusts brother, it starts at a certain level and adjusts to your breathing after your asleep. so if you had a stuffed up nose for example it would compensate accordingly. only problem I have with it, and my buddies say the same, is it only gives you about a solid five hours sleep, which a lot of us, including myself, would kill for.

Staunch, man, every time I try to read your posts your avatar with that chick bent over distracts me....lol....
in a good way though :)

I got it bro..been sleeping with a CPAP for 6 years now.. went t the sleep study yars back..i use to wake up outta a sound sleep gasping for air..Scary as shit.. i go nowhere without the cpap now...

meals how many hours approximately get with your cpap? I usually only get about 5 good hours which for me is awesome, I've never been a good sleeper.
