soreness

I have heard two completely contradictory bits of information and both came from people that I respect, now which seems to make more sense? One man told me that soreness has no relationship to future growth and in fact may have an inverse relationship. The other man told me that soreness is the bodies way of rebuilding itself and a mild soreness within two days after a serious workout is the body overcompensating for the stress put upon it--thus growth is occuring as the body rebuilds itself.
I tend to take soreness as a sign that I had a good workout and growth is forthcoming--thus agreeing with the second man. Both of these guys are knowledgeable one is a powerlifter and the other is a bodybuilder. Any other opinions on this?

i dont know what the "science" says about this subject but i tend to judge my workouts by my soreness as well as other things..cant imagine squatting or pulling and not feeling any soreness later in the day..unless im usign warm up weights the whole time

Well, soreness is usually an indication that you either did a new routine (which is good for gains) or you lifting REALLY hard. Both would be good indications that you got a good workout, BUT, you can also get sore doing 30 reps. So soreness itself probably isn't a good indication that you got a good workout with respect to bodybuilding or strength training, however, if you're doing a good bodybuilding routine or a good strength training routine, I would think soreness would be an indication that you did some good to force your body to adapt.

my soreness varies from body part to body part. my legs always get sore where as my pecs, tris rarely get sore. i know i am hitting them both hard so i dont think there is a direct correlation to muscle growth/soreness. it varies from person to person. same with the PUMP. some guys feel if they dont get a pump they aint hit it HARD. I rarely get a pump unles i do high reps. I do not think soreness will hinder muscle growth though.
