Squat issues

Having started lifting again in a serious way about a month ago, I still have a problem I had way back in highschool during football. When I squat, my left shoulder starts hurting very badly. I usually can feel it start the minute I put my hands on the bar behind my neck. I don't have any problems on any shoulder exercises, although I avoid behind the back lat pulls or shoulder presses just in case. Is there a way I can still get the squat in all of its compound glory?

Try lunges? or do squats on the calve raising machine, squat machine?
Front Squats? hacks squat machine? theres ways around it bro
I cant do a normal squat, i have to do wide stance sumo type.. fucked.

stretch contsantly to increase range of motion . widen hands to lessen the stress and change the angle.
