Squats: explosive or slow?

Hello everyone, I'm a beginner in weight-training and I'm wondering what's the "correct" or best way to do squats.

I've been reading a lot of websites with a mixed idea of how to do it.

Should I either do squats explosively or slowly?

Do the two styles accomplish different results?

Thanks.

depends what u r going for and what type of sports u are training for?

If you are a sprinter a explosive squat would be better, or a football player.

If you wanna be a long distance runner then slow is better.

But if you just wanna train for the love of the iron do a moderate past down and explode up to recruit alot of muscle fibers. Make sure you are going to parallel on the squats.

I was always taught to go down slow and steady in a controlled manner and then *explode* out by trying to force your feet through the floor.

ya thats polymetrics. It is more for sports orientated stuff.
For just normal purpose going down and up is good enough.

Correct.........remember to keep the bar on the traps and foot placement shoulder width.

ON the traps? Ouch! I try to keep the bar in that groove between the traps and rear delts.

I box squat VERY fast and ballistic...as much as possible (hence a speed squat day). I squatted VERY heavy for the first time a few weeks ago and found it impossible to take a BIG weight down fast. Once I hit the hole though...it took less than 1 second to come up with it...closer to 1/2 second. With more practice with weights at and above 700...I should start to feel more comfortable with the bigger weights though...

You know what I mean Dave.......stay away from powerlifter style squatting

I go down controlled and then try to explode up as fast as I can. And I'm sort of a powerlifter (I guess, lol) but I do high bar squats. It's just more comfortable for me.

Thanks bro! .........sorry Dawg no offence bud.....powerlifting is something I dabbled in early on in my training

I don't know, but at the weights I use for squats/front squats/hip sled, I truly couldn't "explode" if I wanted to.. it's not ultra slow, but a smooth motion up and smooth back down...

I play a lot of bball and do benefit from working fast twitch fibers, but I think my quads get plenty of "explosive" training from doing power clean n press... I start with the barbell on the floor (not at thigh level like hang cleans), so the pull phase of them really hits the quads as does the push press part.

This big mofo is the most modest guy in the world!!!!

He squated 800# and acts like it he is not super-human.
