LUNENBURG — A Bridgewater man who made at least $200,000 from the underground steroid lab he ran out of his home has been sentenced to two years and nine months behind bars.

Kevin Wayne Tanner, 40, has also forfeited his car, his home and $45,000 in cash that customs officials found when they searched his Elm Street home in January 2007.

Mr. Tanner pleaded guilty last month to federal drug, customs and proceeds of crime charges. He admitted he smuggled into the country the ingredients to make steroids and to make knock-off Cialis, Viagra and Nolva to counter the side-effects of steroid use. He also admitted to possessing, producing and selling the steroids and evading paying duty on them.

He was sentenced to an additional two months, to be served concurrently, for having child pornography on his computer. Provincial Crown attorney Lloyd Tancock said a forensic analysis of Mr. Tanner’s computer showed two videos and 638 photographs of child porn on Mr. Tanner’s hard drive and another 73 pictures on a disk.

Defence lawyer Alan Ferrier said that of the more than 600 pictures, about 150 were the same photo repeated, and very few had explicit sexual content. He said the images come from "a very short period" of curiosity in Mr. Tanner’s life.

As she sentenced him in Lunenburg provincial court, Judge Anne Crawford told Mr. Tanner it is "very sad" that he destroyed a brilliant future for the sake of ready cash.

He had a degree in business administration from Acadia University, had been the assistant manager of Zellers in New Glasgow and Truro, the manager of Home Hardware in Enfield and, at the time of his arrest, was working at Home Hardware in Bridgewater. He has no criminal record.

Indeed, Mr. Ferrier said his client "lived an unremarkable and normal life" until he ended up running a high-level illegal steroid lab out of the spare bedroom of his home.

It was "a very time-consuming process" to do that while holding down a full-time job, Mr. Ferrier said, adding Mr. Tanner had a good reputation on the Internet for selling a safe and effective product.

Mr. Ferrier blamed "vanity, male vanity for the most part," for the increased demand for illegal steroids in recent years.

Women have plastic surgery; men go for steroids, he said.

"Males have been caught up in the same racket," he said. "For some reason, they want to look like Adonis walking into a bar. . . . It’s a quick fix. You get the body; you don’t have to worry about Bowflex" exercise machines.

Federal Crown attorney Josh Bryson said Mr. Tanner had been smuggling the ingredients from China to make steroids that people either injected into themselves or took in pill form. He said there are "obvious safety issues here."

Mr. Tanner sold them both to other labs and to individuals, and Mr. Bryson said there’s no guarantee the people who bought his steroids weren’t kids.

Mr. Ferrier said Mr. Tanner had a system to determine who was buying his drugs, though it was not perfect, and he did have technology to test the drugs and steroids he made, "a self-directed kind of quality control."

The sentence was recommended by both the prosecution and defence. Judge Crawford said it was appropriate, given Mr. Tanner’s co-operation with investigators and his lack of a criminal record.

"You have a lot of talents, and I believe you can arise again from this and become a responsible member of society," she said.
