on jan 23rd 2013 i had open distal clavicle resection on my right shoulder. after years of cortisone injections and anti inflammatory drugs which only dulled the pain... i have read and heard many different things on recovery... i am 11 days post surgery, i am working mostly on range of motion right now, i can use my right arm for day to day activities (not working) i was curious if anyone here has had or knows someone who has had this procedure and how long before they were back in the gym??/ my physical therapist tried telling me 5 months!!!! my doctor said 3 months... ive read online as few as 4 weeks and as long as a year. any info would be great... thanx

have not had that procedure, it sounds more painful and invasive. i had both shoulders done at different time but it was arthroscopic, a decompression with an elevation. recovery varied on each as procedure process and surgeons improved, first one was 3 months just to use it well and 5 months before gym, second one was one month to use it well and three moths to gym

a little more invasive yes bc they laid it right open to work on it rather than arthroscopic.besides that it was a pretty basic procedure, they just cut approx 1/2 in off of the clavicle to give it a little room...

im hoping 2 months light weight and hopefully back to where i was in 3 months or shortly after.... hoping someone here replies with their recovery from experience

I had Distal Clavicle resection along with a rotator cuff repair 2 1/2 years ago. My shoulder is still not right. 20 years ago I had a rotator cuff repair in the same shoulder and I was 100% after 2 years. No pain or anything else. This time I am limited in that the shoulder hurts while lifting but I am as strong as I was before. The reason for this I believe is because of the resection. Taking a piece of the collarbone is not a minor thing for weight lifters. It's going to affect us.

One thing is for sure, dont try to go too fast and do more damage. Take it slow and progressively.
Good luck!
