Target T levels

I have read suggestions that T levels should be in the upper third of the range when under trt. What is the rationale for this? Does age or weight factor into this?

The range for my tests has been 348-1197. My doc wants to shoot for 500-700. He is open to working with this level depending on how I feel but he assures me that at 500 or so I will feel much better. Being that my levels have been in the low 300s I can't disagree.

I am not a bodybuilder. I am curious if there is a medical reason for this.

Most doctors believe in treating conditions with the least medication possible. To that end, your doctor most likely wants you to feel healthy without overloading your body with too much medication. That is not a bad thing.

Unlike your natural hormones, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a game with highs and lows (unless you are injecting daily). With that in mind, you need to understand when your doctor wants to measure your T levels. If you are at a trough (lowest point) of 500, you may be as high or higher than 800 at other times. Again, the "when" is an important distinction.

Most importantly, don't get caught up in numbers. Go by feel. If you feel good and normal, it doesn't matter what the numbers are.

Nordic is right when he says don't get hung up on numbers.

Follow your doc's protocol and focus on how you feel.

I have read that many Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) recipients will not respond to treatment until certain levels are reached, but this isn't a one size fits all discipline.

The "upper third of the range" philosophy is quite common among Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Specialisits and Anti-Aging docs, but not quite as universal among GP's, Endos and Uros, in my experience.

My GP wanted me to be around 500-600.

I feel best when my levels are at around 1500. If it gets higher than that I get high blood pressure and have trouble dialing in the estrogen.

Well said. For me I think I liked even more than that at peek, but too much and BP can become an issue. Although in my case E2 was not an issue even at pretty high test levels.
