This is the story of many medical errors by doctors, who foolishly told me I had normal testosterone even though they signed documents officially informing me that I had the following health problems:
These are the first 4 symptoms at age 15. The symptoms will get horrific at 23 years of age:
-Gynecomastia;
-Low musculature on my back;
-Very poor physical form;
-Extreme fatigue (I slept 13 hours a day from 12 years of age to 23.6 years of age).
At this moment, I'm 6 feet 6 inches and 272 pounds, I have Viking/Norman ancestry. The doctors thought I had kleinfelter's syndrome. Klinefelter's syndrome is a condition in which human males have an extra X chromosome. The condition exists in roughly 1 out of every 500-650 males. Individuals will often have a low serum testosterone level. The problem was that since I did not have that genetic defect, the doctors just told me to go home and that I was healthy. Very tall men who have low testosterone usually have kleinfelter's syndrome, I did not, so the doctor dismissed my health problems. Very frustrating.
2003 (15 years old)
LOW Total testosterone 4.0nmol/L (range 9.7 - 29.6) OR (US units: 115ng/dl range 300 to 900)
NEGATIVE kleinfelter's syndrome test
2011 (23.5 years old)
LOW Total testosterone 6.5nmol/L (range 9.7 - 29.6) OR (US units: 187ng/dl range 300 to 900)
NEGATIVE kleinfelter's syndrome test
2011 (23.6 years old)
LOW Total testosterone 9.3nmol/L (range 9.7 - 29.6) OR (US units: 268ng/dl range 300 to 900)
LOW Free testosterone 217pmol/L (range 273 - 679)
LOW Bio-available testosterone 5.1nmol/L (range 6.4 - 15.9)
At 23 years of age I noticed that my penis turned white and that Vitiligo was forming on and around my penis. Vitiligo is a condition that causes depigmentation of sections of skin. At the same time, my pubic hair turned grey. Then, my pubic hair fell out. I was sleeping 16 hours a day. My stress level was at around 40/10, similar to people who lived extreme stress from going to war and/or seeing all their friends and family die. I became diabetic even though tests showed I was not diabetic. Eventually I wasn't even able to think, walk, run. I gained 100 pounds of weight. Here are some of the symptoms I noted:
-No facial hair growth;
-Extremely irritable;
-Extreme stress;
-Excessive and frequent yawning (5 to 30 per hour, all day long);
-Extreme loss of confidence;
-Loss of memory, inability to concentrate;
-Loss of all muscle mass and no energy;
-Libido around 0% and 5% of a normal male;
-No morning erections;
-Weight gain;
-Gynecomastia;
-No physical endurance;
-Hot flashes;
-Vitiligo;
-Loss of pubic hair;
-Diabetes;
-Near fainting;
-Crying like a baby;
-Inability to tolerate heat;
-Feeling sick all the time;
-No motivation, extreme depression;
-I felt like I was dying (I was!).
I quit my highly paying job in the nuclear industry and went home to do nothing. One day, my stress was around 200/10, I was thinking of killing myself to get away from the extreme ridiculous unimaginable suffering caused by having testosterone hit the near ZERO mark. For some reason I just got in my car and drove to the emergency room. I explained my problem to all the nurses and actually gave them a list of my symptoms. This doctor said I had nothing (third foolish doctor). I insisted and told him I was on the verge of death: "Check my testosterone, see if I'm diabetic, check my thyroid, I'm 100% sure my body stopped producing testosterone, you're telling me I'm healthy when I can't even bend over and pick-up a piece of paper without fainting, I can't even have an erection and I've lost all my muscle, I'm half blind half of the time!". This doctor was another fool on my long decade journey to recovery.
I went to see an endocrinologist. He told me that he couldn't see me because I had to wait in line or have cancer/diabetes to see him. So I had to wait for 8 months (Canadian socialist healthcare). I was probably 1 month away from suicide and 5 months away from death. A few weeks more of suffering passed. My mom actually went into that doctor's office and asked him where I could see an endocrinologist even if I had to take the plane. It turns out that 50km from my house there was a world expert testosterone specialist that was in semi-retirement. Great! I saw him. He told me that I was extremely sick and that it was a miracle that I had been able to work from the age of 18 to 23. He told me that my thyroid had failed. Because of this, every organ in my body was failing and it was a vicious circle of degeneration. Good thing it wasn't radiation from working in the nuclear industry.
He put me on Delatestryl (testosterone-enanthate) injections. We tried:
-200mg/14days. That didn't work;
-140mg/7days. Better;
-120mg/5days. Better;
-Then there was a world shortage of delatestryl so I changed to the equivalent in Depo-testosterone (testosterone-cypionate). 1 ml of Delatestryl = 2 ml Depo-testosterone. You just have to take exactly double.
-So I am now at 120mg/5days of Depo-testosterone.
Testosterone therapy is a miracle in my life. It's the best thing that ever happened to me! My healing is far from done, but I'm on my way there!
Here is a link to my youtube video if you want to see what steroids I'm on. It's a simple slideshow with a video at the end.
