TRT, water retention and sleep apnea

I understand TRT causes water retention. Does that water retention go away over time or do TRT patients always have an elevated level of water from TRT? If so, can the elevated water cause sleep apnea?

TRT doesn't cause water retention; elevated estradiol does. There are quick and easy two ways to lower it: lower TRT dose or take an ai. Do you have a recent blood test?

Reducing body fat will help to keep e levels in better shape.

Unrelated to hormones, reducing sodium and/or going on a low carb diet will help your body hold less water.

I'm guessing here, but I doubt water retention would cause sleep apnea, but it might make it worse.

Are you over weight? This may be the leading cause of sleep apnea.

Did you get your screen name in prison?

I have been on TRT for a little over 2 years. I knew I had sleep apnea before starting TRT but it wasn't that bad and didn't really affect me all that much. After starting TRT I quickly noticed the my apnea was far more noticeable when it hadn't been before. I spoke with my doctor and he told me that he hears the same thing from other patients. I really do not know how to explain it but going on TRT seems to cause the apnea to become more noticeable. I went in for a sleep study and was prescribed a cpap machine which I really never got use to wearing. I have lost a little over 100 pounds over the past 14 months and now find that apnea is not longer an issue for me.

Hope this helps, best of luck to you!

You will get some "water retention". If your really low T then your body is low on water, normalizing levels should normalize that. Thats one thing that helps with the joints and strength.

As posted above though you can have too much water retention from E2 levels. I would say 5-8 pound weight gain is perfectly normal depending on your size.

More than that, especially rapidly, could be an E2 spike. For me the best way to tell is edema in the ankles or in your fingers.

Interlocking your fingers can reveal too much water retention.

Hope this helps.

I know that water retention and weight gain plays a big part in it for sure. I have sleep apnea and really feel it when I am holding water.

there are studies that show that TRT exacerbates pre existing conditions like sleep apnea

Do you recall why it does? Some say TRT helps them sleep better, some say worse. It's all over the map. Someone suggested I take my Pregnenolone in the morning instead of at night and so far I have been sleeping a ton better.

have you had a sleep study done?

I have not. I do snore so it's very possible. Prior to TRT I never felt the need as I slept well and woke fresh. Since TRT my sleep quality has been very off and on. Like I said in the post above I now am taking Preg in the AM instead of before bed and my sleep has been miles better.

nice, how about that sleep study, made any progress on that?

Studies just show a correlation. Getting prescribed TRT is all over the map so the results will be the same
