walking stairs with dumbells.

does any one think its would be a bad idea to walk up stairs wearing a powerlifting belt and walking up stairs with dumbells in each hand. i want to get more of a free weight leeg work out but i cant really push to hard on the swuats cause i hurt my back so i stay light or it gets irratated. i saw them talking about it muscular development but i cant find the issue.

one of the things i used to do for my deadlift, by orders of rickey dale crain and vince anello- both famous deadlifters was to do "stepups". they both said i should either carry the weight on my back or use dumbells and step up onto a bench or box and then back down again.
I'm sure going up stairs would be considered similar work.

It will definantly add strength to your legs if you do these consistently. Try investing in a weighted vest (i dont know if this may affect your injured back), but their also very effective when walking up steps. Holding the db's may get annoying.

well i was gonna use traps, i just wanna make sure its not a stupid idea in the way of hurting my self. i wanted to make sure it was an actual exercise, i dont wanna be one of those guys who makes up his own exercises.

You could also push and/or pull your car around the gym parking lot.

I push, pull, and deadlift mine on a regular basis. I think that all men should be able to deadlift their vehicle...don't you?

"walking stairs with dumbells"

Great idea. but unless you want to make it a modified farmers walk then i recomend vest becasue your arms and grip will tire.

Yeah...in the sand. The spotter wasn't working fast enough and let the car come back and land on him. Actually he was flipping it, slipped and fell under it with his leg bent back under him like a quad stretch...then the car fell on his thigh like that.

the dengerous thing is walking down thou.it would be hard to stand erect and not fall on my face.

You also have to take into consideration the shearing forces on your knees. When walking down the stairs with added weight, they become hellacious. At the very least, walk backwards down the stairs. The fact that a lot of stairs I've come across aren't really wide enough to fit an entire man's foot on comfortably can also be a problem for the knees because you're forced to shift weight to the forefoot, once again increasing shearing forces on the knees.

The best approach, in my opinion, is to safely elevate a bench enough for a good stretch from step-ups. I've been doing these for about a month mixing it up between barbell on the shoulders and dumbells down at the sides, and I love them. As long as you set the bench up high enough and go heavy enough, they require a lot of muscles coming into play working in conjunction with one another from the core, to basically every part of the glutes, hams, and all heads of the quads. Great movement for muscular development and for sports.

or take the elevator down. =0)

i agree 100% with spinach. coming down the stairs is gonna be rough on the knees. hurts mine to think about it.
