weight Training For The Younger Ones

I am reading this magazine called MD, Muscular Development.

I can't remember if it was lee preist or jay cutler but he was answering a question on how to build up thighs.

preist/cutler said DON'T squat heavy weights, it will contribute to stunting growth. Instead, squat medium weight or lighter weight for 20-25 reps. The kid he was replying to was 16.

But nonetheless, for the younger readers- Don't expect to start training as young as you are (assuming you're a teen or still growing) and grow huge.. but instead go for lighter to medium weight for more reps as it will give you the greatest gains at your age range.

Just thought some others might like to read..

Depends on physique, I was 6'2'' at 16, and really only grew an inch from 16 - 19yrs old, but then again I didnt lift heavy squats til about early 18

I started doing heavy squats as 7th-8th grader in football offseason, and I'm 5'11" and the tallest guy in my family. Squats do not stunt your growth.

I was just using squats as an example. Supposedly maxing out weights before or during your growth spurts stunts them.

this is good though, keep posting your thoughts on it.

I'm still very young and have been lifting heavy weights since the age of 13 naturally. Also to add, im 6 foot 1...I personally think that the whole topic of heavy weighlifting stunting your growth is just a myth.

im 15 so i guess i can reply. are you talking about stuinting growth in your muscles or in your overall structure? you kind of lost me in that post.

i dont really care if i dont get any taller - im 5'11" now and i dont see any reason to go easy on the lifting.

Jack, that's talking about stunting overall height growth, not musculature. I remember a thread about this topic on here a while back that went for several pages, but I can't seem to find it right now. If anybody can find it, link it up.

YES it will stunt growth with young kids, i have been lifting ever since i was probably 4 with my older brother, at least bench pressing when i was little. And I have stunted growth in my upper body from that, my chest abs look very short compared to my legs. And my ribs are shaped weird. im 6 ft and would of probably been 6'3 6'4 atleast
