Whats up with Overrated Exercises

Some exercises become so common that few people take the time to question their validity. Perhaps they began as specialty exercises intended for use in specific contexts -- by patients in rehab, for example, or by advanced bodybuilders who need the most challenging variations of certain movements. Some trainers noticed the exercises worked for those specific trainees in those specific situations and started pushing the workouts toward the middle, to be used by everyone. Over time, the exercises become a bit too popular, and they end up vastly overrated. But keep in mind that "overrated" does not mean "bad." It simply means there are better choices than those that are currently popular. In some cases, intermediate and advanced lifters get stuck...

Now if only all those peeps doing those silly ab machines at the gym would read this. Then again, I like my leg presses and narrow grip seated low rows. :(

1) ab exercises. 2) deadlift. 3) squat
i really dont believe people abs really get any bigger or stronger by doing ab exercises.
squats & dead lifts both good and effective exercises but one error in form can give you serious back or knee problems.

Weighted ab exercises actually make your abs more thick (and strong), but that's the opposite of what many want to achieve - which can be found by simply reducing body fat percentages. Deadlifts and squats are PHENOMENAL exercises and unless you have pre-existing issues, are probably the most important lifts a person can do. The problem comes from folks trying to toss up too much weight too quickly with poor form. If you can master proper form at lower weight, and know your limits - you can easily use these to put on a great deal of mass/strength while helping to build a strong core that will prevent injuries later on.

My .02c :)

ya i agree, like i said there good exercises but many people hurt themselves doing it. if you have perfect form then your g2g. i would say thats kind of an advanced exercise tho. i wouldnt tell your average person to do it. i have pre existing back problems so i never do them

Bummer, deads will make a man out of you! I can't really do them anymore myself after 3 successive knee surgeries, and I miss the hell out of them. :(
