Who here trains using a specific program? Or do most just train instinctively? I talk to a lot of the big guys at my gym and ask what programming they use and most of the time I get looked at funny, like they've never heard of it. It blows because these are the bigger stronger guys and they just come in and do whatever they feel like on any given day. How the hell does that even work? If I just did whatever, I would get nowhere.

Ive never used a program ever, and how my workouts go is I do whatever I feel like doing at the time and what I really feel is gonna get the job done that day as long as its different than the prior workout i did for that muscle group.

Strict routines at least IMO for building muscle arent any more effective than anything else and they take the fun out of it. Who want to go in the and do the same ol thing over and over and over. Most guys that do this at least from my seeings never grow.

Never have used a program freestyle it according to whatever machines or spots are open at the gym i also freestyle my cycles lol

So you don't ever think about progression? Lifting more the next time or getting more reps etc...? I get what youre saying, adhering to programming feels too strict sometimes. I've been so bent on programming lately that I get the dreaded analysis paralysis and then get all screwed up. I'm going back to freestyle for a while and see what happens.

I dont care about more weight I care avout the quality of my pump give me a pair of 10lb dumbbells with No other choices and ill make it work. I dont lesve the gym until i hit the muscles with enough stimulation

Dude your ignoring the big, fat ass elephant in the room - drugs.

On cycle you can train however you want and still make serious gains.
I've seen guys get massive gains doing 30+ rep "pump" workouts, doing crossfit, doing circuit training, hell I even know a guy who got massive legs doing NO leg workouts & only stairmaster a few times a week.
This isn't a criticism - its just a fact that you can get away with a lot of shit in the gym if your on cycle because drugs are awesome :)
I should also mention that this is exactly why you should ignore 99% of enhanced guys giving out advice on training, they are completely ignorant when it comes to the large majority of their results being attributed to the compounds, not the training.

As for programming, I've done & created many programmes for me & my clients - it has its benefits & downfalls.
For beginners, or those who never bothered to learn about training, its absolutely essential.
For experienced lifters, not so much.

The biggest problem with programmes, as schredder alluded to, is that people get bored - and your mentality definitely matters when it comes to training. I have created programmes where guys have continued to make gains for months & months with no changes, but despite the constant progress, they get bored and require a change.
The biggest benefit is obviously the fact that you know your training is dialled in provided you chose the appropriate program. In other words, provided you do what the programme tells you. you will see results.

I personally don't follow a strict program because I know how to create my own & make sure its structured in such a way that I can continually make gains. But that's just me.
So it depends on how experienced lifter you are, how confident you are in your own ability to monitor & adjust your training based on results, etc.

Everything i say is because im assuming everyone is on hormones in that case 10lb dumbells wont do shit for you

No worries guys , I have my special vitamins. I started lifting in 1998. I've used a lot of different methods, from powerlifting, bodybuilding style, martial arts etc... I took a wwhile off of lifting a few yrs ago but have been back at it nonstop for 3 yrs now. My problem is I read too much. Everywhere you look people are pushing programs, and for the last two yrs I've been trying to find one that makes me happy. But life always gets in the way and the scheduling gets fucked up and the program takes a back seat. I actually think I respond better to higher reps for most lifts.

Oh i was thinking more from a bodybuilding prospective i can see there is a big difference in powerlifting about progression

I am on cycle, following mountaindog training (first program I've ever tried/followed) and liking it

I've made a lot of progress without a program too, just trying something new

While I love training powerlifting style, its not doing much for my physique. Even with high rep assistance work. I'm going to try higher rep ranges and training muscles rather than movements for a while. My next cycle will hopefully start in april so it times perfectly with that. I'll keep slot of the same exercises but go higher rep.

I picked up John meadows e-book not long ago about adjusting meal plans. Great stuff in there!

I guess adding to what Zilla said I actually might use a program after all. Except they are created by myself. Usually a mix of different thing I have read/learned all incorperated together. I take bits and pieces from different guys I find to be useful and mix it together. I usually stick to a certain 'program' for 8-12 weeks if I find it to be effective then whip up some new from something new I have stumbled across.

As far as programs that are already layed out, no. But, if I were to it would be mountain dog as I find that very interesting or something along the lines of a Dorian Yates style HIT.

Agreed, sometimes it gets boring but if you stick with it and have faith in it, the results will come. More so with strength based programs than hypertrophy based. In my experiences anyway.
