WTF is wrong with my body?

Second time in a row that I've done squats and gotten a shitload of swelling on the posterior delt/AC joint area and across the vertebral column. Last time (2 weeks ago, skipped a week it was so bad before) I had a knot the size of a baseball on my left shoulder, and the knot on my neck didn't go down for a week.

So, I guess my question would be what kind of conditions cause an inflammatory response like that? I've also mentioned before that I've had mild chest pain (more consistent with a nerve or muscle injury than cardiac problems) since this summer, so I don't know if it's something to do with that or what.

unless you go to a doc there is no way to be sure . if i were you i would let the swellling go down and the concentrate on stretching out that area extremely well before squatting again , with my size i have a very hard time reaching back to hold a standard length bar so its possible that is your problem , also dont be afraid to use icy hot or something similar before working out to warm the area and get the blood flowing .
ask your self are you trying to hold the bar with your arms or is it resting on your back and your arms are just there to steady it . you may be useing to much arm pressure even if its subconciously .

My arms are generally there just to steady it. Last time, my form was off just a little, so I attributed the swelling to that, but this time it was fine.

do you look up/down/straight ahead while squatting ?

Straight ahead and a little up. I try to keep my head up and focused on the little chalk dot on the wall they've got for that purpose.

experiment a little at lower weight and try looking ahead but eyes slightly up , you may be driving up/back so hard with your neck/head your pinching something in your traps or neck ands causeing the pain , i cant promise you thats your problem but ive seen it before where guys were trying hard to heep their head up and since you strain every muscle in your body on a heavy squat they were putting to much force on their head/neck and were hurting themselves , its rare but possible and its easy enough to try it and see .
