OK, he is not really a meanie...pretty sure he does not want to kill me...but the title was catchy, no?

I have just started working with him and wanted to post my thoughts, for anyone who wonders. He is very good to worth with so far and answers questions pretty quickly. He is able to easily dumb things down for those of us (e.g. me) who have no idea about how to exercise or eat properly.

You WILL work hard if you honestly follow his exercise regimen (which I start tonight) and you WILL have trouble eating all the food you need to eat at the start of this (at least I am having that problem). But from the pictures of other clients, he can turn a doughboy into a monster if you provide the required updates to him and do the required work.


I plan on doing updates to this log as time goes on, to tell my triumphs, failures, pain, and glories.

I hear ya, I just started today as well with his diet and training. I had trouble with finishing the meals too and I still have 2 to go tonight. Yes his workouts burn if you do them faithfully.But in the end it will be so worth it. The next 6 months will be a trip thats forsure.I have total faith in him and am glad to have him in my corner.I will be interesting to see the transformation in 6 months.
Keep with it! And the reward will be glorious.

I wonder if I should post transformation pics as I go - or just wait and post the before and after pics at the end - or maybe do 3 month increments...hmmm....

Well, I will post the before shots. Take note that these are with NO flexing at all - not even the regular, routine "hold your intestines inside your body" ab flexing. I will do update pics when there is something worthy of seeing. :) No sure how long that will be.

I finished my first workout and I used a machine I never used before. It is the barbell holding machine that allows you to twist your wrists and have it catch hold of the bar so you do not crush your chest or head if you realize you have done one rep too many. Some super hot Asian woman was using one to do squats while I used the bench to work my chest. I was intimidated by the machine at first, but it is actually an easy, and nice, machine!

Smith machine - meh. Doesn't allow the bar to follow a natural path. I avoid it when I can. Better to press in a squat rack solo for safety.
 
Here it is, found a picture of it. The bar slides up those two side bars and has a cable attached to it as well. The bar has hooks on it and they will hook onto one of the multiple levels on the support beam.

Ahhhhhhh, planet fitness. Great place to get cheap tanning and cardio. Once you've spent some time building up your base, you will want to find another gym though. I won't pick on you for going there, but smith machines are not good for your shoulders at all.

Grats on getting things moving in the right direction, and doing it right with a proper diet. 3J knows his stuff, and can certainly teach you how to reach your goals. :)

Well done with getting into the 3J program OP... lots of work to do (and food to get through)...
I am curious though... you are obviously a beginner to the scene... and welcome...
But how did you manage to get to a rep score of 6 without knowing what a smiths machine is?
I'm guessing you might be a pharmacist?

While I do not work in the field any longer, I have a degree in Nuclear Engineering. This means I am very good at research and learning - I have been passing on what I have learned to help others, so I get a bunch of rep. Also, like Therealkozmo said, if you do not give out rep you cannot receive much of it at all. :)

I did my first dead lifts yesterday. Prior to this painful journey with 3Js, I have only been doing circuit training using the machines at Planet Fitness. I have always gotten a good workout because I understand one of they keys to getting stronger is to push yourself - so if I did not end my circuit training wiped out and sore I did not do it right. Planet Fitness is VERY cheap - something I can afford (and also includes tanning) - AND is less than 3 miles of easy driving from my house.

So I went to $%^&Ideadlift-the-ultimate-exercise-not-just-for-zombies/]Dead Lifts[/url] prior to heading to the gym to get a basic understanding. When the time came to do the dead lifts, someone was doing them already. Perfect, I thought, he has a lot of weight on and I can watch him for a bit. Something just did not look right, but not having much of a clue I could not put my finger on it. When he was done I dropped the weight considerably and then asked someone in the free weights section if he knew how to do dead lifts since this would be my very first one. He was thrilled I asked him and he watched me do one. He said it was pretty good, but then went on to tell me how just about everything I did needed changed somewhat. :)

After doing a couple of reps he asked another guy over to take a look at my form to make sure I am doing it right and he said I was - BUT he said to drastically drop my weight until I can do the form properly without having to think about the form at all. Great advice, so I did. He must have read my mind, because he said "I know you feel like a weakling compared to the guy who just left, but his form was terrible. We tried to help him but he wants none of it. He refuses to put his feet at shoulder width apart and therefor will eventually hurt himself." He also told me that it is far better to do low weight with proper form than high weight with bad form and that I should be proud to be doing dead lifts at all as that shows I care enough about my fitness to do one of the best exercises. The guy's biceps were roughly the size of my head, and after talking to a few others in the free weights section of the gym I found out they all respect him and say he absolutely knows what he is talking about when it comes to form.

I also learned dead lifts are a LOT harder then they look!

Two days into this and I am either going to die or become powerful and lean...I am partial to the latter choice. :)

Smart move.. If its your first time deadlifting you should do a super low weight and only work in form
 
I am feeling much more confident with the dead lifts now. After proving it to myself with low weight, I increased the weight slightly and was able to still keep the proper form. Dead lifts are HARD! No wonder so many websites call them one of the two most important exercises you can do (the other being squats).
