a question about whether u can lift heavy or not

does lifting heavy monster ass weight heavily depends on your genetics/fibers/tendons and the shit???? or is it all come down to technique??

i mean, i wonder why there aren't much people breaking world records even though they're uber strong and all.

officially, andy bolton holds both record of deadlift and squat and if he can break the bench, he'd be the overall monster :afro:

I believe it has to do with genetics, because no matter how many Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) I have running through my system and no matter how long I stay on and train as hard as I could, I could still never in my dreams bench 1100lbs.

depends what level you;re talking about, a regional PL comp, I think most people with years of good training and nutrition could do ok. To be the no.1 strongman in the world, or break PL records, of course, the guys who do that are genetic freaks.

heavy is a relative term. whats heavy for one is light for another but it shouldnt deter you from going heavy. one of my pards out benches me by 200+lbs. however that doesnt stop me from giving 100% to try and improve my bench.

I can't lift heavy at all. I'm seriously as weak as they come. If I didn't lift then picking up 5-8 pound dumbells would be a challenge. I personally think genetics plays a big part.

Genetics play a part in everything! Some of us are naturally bigger, stronger, smarter, richer - you name it. But that doesn't mean you can't achieve your goals. It's just that some people have a head start. Thats life.

genetics definately plays a big part..we can all get big with training but many of us wont turn pro, we can train to be a distance runner but may not be in the olympics. I believe the same goes for powerlifting and strong man competitions. In fact, i just thought about how well norweigan people do in these sports.

Great technique maximizes genetics (both good and bad).

and like PB said, its all relative.

I see what you are asking. I've always wondered that too. At what point is someone STRONG, versus SKILLED.

If a 200# guy can bench 300 lbs on his first try, never having benched before, to me that is strong, not much skill involved.

If a 200# guy can bech 300 lbs and he's been lifting for years, to me he's more skilled.

Excellent reply! It's posts like this from well respected guys like yourself that help many of us to stay focussed on doing OUR best and taking OUR bodies to the best level we can achieve. At the end of the day, our most fierce competition (regardless of sport) is the bastard in the mirror. The me of today has to beat the me of yesterday or I am losing ground.

As for the genetics question, you have athletes in different sports that excel because they have more fast twitch fibers where needed or more slow twitch fibers where needed. This is decided by genetics, and there are ways to test a given group to find if you have more fast twitch or slow twitch fibers.

If you have a natural gift for a given sport, it is likely that your fast/slow twitch fiber ratios for the requisite muscle groups granted by your parents matches up well with your sport.

so is it possible that some won't be benching 500+, squatting 500+ and deadlifting 500+ in their entire life???

big difference between a 500 bench and a 500 dead. not alot of guys will ever bench 500 raw. however a 500 dead is very doable for almost anyone if they are willing to work for it. dont get caught up in the #s game, just strive for progress. thats all any of us can hope for.

I concur. It's probably safe to say that anyone who puts in the time and effort will be able to bench 2x their bw and squat/dead 3x the bodyweight. Beyond this is a whole new ball game. Starting at 6'tall and 135#...i'd say i've come a long way to a solid 195#. I still have some skinny ass knees, wrists, elbows, and ankles though to prove i started as a very small guy. I know I will never be a PL champion, i accept my genetics suck but i'm gonna keep working hard and hopefully pull 600 before the new year. And who knows, maybe with 10 years of usage, i'll be over the thousand pull...but that's too far down the road for me to see.

Keep hitting it hard angry, give it all you got and you will get it all back.
