I have a request to make of you all. Don't take this the wrong way if you're not religious or don't believe in prayer.
4 and a few months ago, I was 2 months into a tour in Iraq. We had actually been in Baghdad a month. One day we were about to leave for patrol, my sergeant tell's me "Hey, we need an extra interpreter today, you're staying here". So I just stayed and cleaned the area, watched a movie. About 2 hours later my guys come screaming in to the base, with a man down. Sergeant Ford had been shot in the side of chest by a sniper.
He died on the Medevac bird.
Couple of months later, We lost Staff Sergeant Tomzack, Same sniper.
One month after that, I was working out with one of my buddies from another platoon, Sergeant Vanek. We had a fucking brutal workout. I haven't had many like this. Shortly after, he took about an hour nap and then went on patrol. I was on radio watch that night and I heard the call over the radio that a soldier had been shot, same MO as the other two deaths. Then our commander asked for the name of the soldier and I heard Vanek's name over the radio. He was already dead.
The reason I tell you this is I want their memories honored. I want people to remember, so that their death was not in vain.
If you can't honor the cause, as I know well many people can't, at least remember the fallen, and remember the families left behind.
What I'd like to ask is that you just pray for their families this Veteran's day. And if you don't believe in prayer, Just think of them.
Thanks guys.
