Plan on getting my NASM or ACSM in the next few months. I live close to Columbus and Cincinnati so I am willing to travel to either for a job at a bigger gym. Can't stand working retail anymore(hate selling cell phones). I really want to work with athletes and competitors in the future but i realize I have to build myself up. Currently in retail right now it's effecting my training schedule and eating too much. I'll always get my workouts in but my diet(although clean) is never on point because of work pace(went 6 hours the other day with no food). Anyway I need some advice on the best way to get a Training career going. I'm hoping to just be making at least 2-3k a month withing a year(only about 21k a yr now) because I'm gonna need all I can get as I have a baby on the way!!

Thanks for any advice guys!!

At my gym, the busiest personal trainers are usually the most fit, absolutely jacked and juiced up. They all have done some sort of show or competition to show they mean business. If I were to get training sessions I would go to the biggest fucker in the gym. Not saying you have to be a monster, but make sure you are in some decent shape. At least an aesthetic look of some kind.

be sure you are an expert, if you're not, become one so that you are valuable, learn the psychology behind the exercise habit, lots of beginners need their minds and thought patterns changed, not so much their bodies, change their minds and their bodies will follow. If you can do that, you will be more successful, create a demand and be able to raise your prices. good luck with the baby!!

I used to be a personal trainer & transitioned into a coach so here's my advice for you:

Being a personal trainer is pretty easy if you know how to sell your self - your sales background suggests you know what I'm about :)
All you really need to do to make good money as a PT is be in touch with the latest fads (crossfit, IF, etc) and look like you know what your talking about (ripped).
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT become some big meathead because 90% of the people with money in the gym don't want that look.
You want to look like a ripped fitness model & people will automatically think your an amazing PT.
Being a knowledgeable guy will not make you money as a PT, being in fashion with the latest trends will.
So, to support your family dude, learn all you can in the background (degrees, PHDs, etc) but to make money as a PT - look good & follow the trends.

Now long term to become a good coach to athletes/pros then, hopefully, all that knowledge you've built up will be very useful. The pros want coaches who know it all, so the more educational qualifications you get, the better.
