Affliction 2: January 24, 2009

It is tough competing against the UFC. UFC has been around for a long time, they run TUF, and brand name is all over the place. They have a huge following because everyone associates MMA with UFC.

Affliction started off as a clothing company and sure they have some big names, Jow Blow MMA fan doesn't know or care who the fuck Fedor is. Big deal he beat Sylvia in 36 secs. Sylvia hasn't put on an exciting fight in years. Barnett hasn't done much in North America and his only big wins (in the UFC) were well before MMA and UFC were main stream.

I don't know how Affliction plans to compete with UFC, but with huge pay days they need to rake in the PPV buys or they will fold like every other company.

how does any show make money on "free" television? advertising. when they get popular enough then they can do PPV events.

But when Affliction's problem is exposure the advertising companies aren't going to pay big bucks to them yet. Once they have established their name maybe. You're trying to do it backwards.

i think the opposite. the advertisers will pay big bucks when they get people to watch. i think by going the PPV route, they arent going to get much attention. if they got with a network first and grew their fan base then they could capitalize with PPV.

at least that seems like a logical way of doing it. ufc exploded when they got a show on regular free tv.

Chris Horodecki is out. He wasn't medically cleared to fight.

That sucks.

Last time we lost aleksander emelianenko for similar reasons

I was at the fight.

Fedor is very fast, and so relaxed in the ring. when he takes a punch he totally relaxes, it was interesting to see it in person.

Andre really looked great, his guard was tough for fedor to get through, fedor only really landed 1 solid shot before the KO punch, it was a body shot, because andre was blocking and dodging all fedors other attempts.

Andre looked hesitant when he went for that flying knee thing he does, I think he really thought fedor was hurt. Fedor took that front push kick in such a relaxed fashion that andre seemed to think he had him stunned, so he went in for the flying knee, and he was probably going to try to follow the knee with his flurry of punches,,, but fedor timed the punch perfectly, it happened so fast.

I'm so happy i got a chance to see fedor fight, I think he's the best out there, I hope we get a chance to see if he can beat the ufc's current top group.

And matt lindland was on the matt forEVER! he was 100% out of it, it was freaky to watch him wobble around in his ring on his back still trying to fight.

interesting, affliction may not be around for too long.

i wonder at what point are fighters able to earn enough that they can commit full time to fighting and not need to have a full time job in addition. matt hamill seems like a pretty well known fighter but 20k a fight isnt much to live on.

I know that Affliction's goal to get fighters was to pay quite a bit more; and this obviously proves it. Regardless it seems that fighters currently still are striving to be in the UFC; perhaps because more coverage? Will this change as Affliction grows bigger or will Affliction end up folding because paying too much out to the fighters? It will be interesting to see over time.

i would think marketing is a huge expense and critical to keeping the organization in peoples minds. you spend the money on fighters and not marketing the organization then they will probably fail.

I hate how people are making it out to be like Fedor was rocked by Arlovski and almost ko'd. He wasn't even hurt.
