Almost all of my protein intake is from powder. Bad?

DEATH to "The Club Boys"!
I am consuming about 80-90% of my protein via Whey protein powder. I have about 5 to 9 50g protein shakes a day - Mixed in 50% water and 50% fat free milk

I do eat solid food like oatmeal, rice, fruit, veggies, tuna from time to time etc.

I just don't like cooking and preparing meals. I do want to eventually eat more chicken and fish.

But as of now, is it bad for me to get all / most of my protein from powder? I feel good. I'm getting stronger, leaner, and my muscles are growing.

Thanks!

(second hand knowledge)

I was told awhile back on this forum that its BETTER if you get some of your protein, or more than you do from shakes, from food. Chicken is an EXCELLENT source of protein. Eggs. Etc.

Well it means that your diet of solid food sucks. Also whey is absorbed quite fast. Mixing it with milk helps a bit, but nonetheless, slow protein from meat etc is better unless it's around workout time.

You could at least blend up casein powder or just plain old cottage cheese.

The majority of your protein should come from good solid food, I find it hard to believe that such a high percentage of your protein consumption is whey powder. Learn to cook it is one of the joys of life, so is eating good food.

I am just learning to cook.
....

I know how to boil chicken and make eggs. Is there more to learn?

Make a tuna shake. YUM!

Seriously though I replace protein in my meals with blended up cottage cheese quite frequently. Sure I go through the stuff faster than an old folk home, but it's so easy. Put in some PB and milk and you're set.

I just put a half cup of cottage cheese in the blender with some milk, muscle milk, and 100% whey and its very good! So if I add cottage cheese to all or half of my shakes that will be a major improvement?

Tuna shakes ar ok, but I had a bad experience with the last cans of tuna I got. They stunk a lot more than usual and grossed me out big time. I think it was starkist.

Well all the shakes you have that are not around workout time, it would probably be a good idea to get slow protein, because if there's no immediate demand, it will be burned for energy. The body cannot store dietary protein, it can only take it's time with it.

i prefere to get my nutrients from food sources. i only drink 2 protein drinks a day, 1 is post workout, 1 is 9am..

I too prefer to get a lot of my protein through whole food sources. I do use whey protein shakes two to three times a day but the other four/five meals are from whole foods such as tuna, chicken, salmon and eggs. Just try prepping your food the night before so that it's all done for the next day!:)

So if I continue to drink as many shakes as I have been, what would be the best protein type I should blend? I could keep whey for when i wake up and after a workout. What should I drink during the day and night?

Thanks.

Casein, milk protein isolate, or egg protein.

The slow ones.

Is it ok to mix egg whites into my protein shake in the mourning, or should I stick to chuggin em?

it tastes like cake mix .. when u mix egg whites with ur shake ...

but for some reason it was soo hard for me to drink ... maybe ud like ti though :D

If you are eating solid food "from time to time" it is important that you take a multivitamin and get your EFA's... plus you have hardly any fibre (maybe 1 g per shake is my guess). Have some flax in a couple of shakes, other than that, I say protein is protein, who cares where you get it from;)

why, if you don't mind me asking,?

like rjx i get most of my protein from shakes but i also eat 2 solid meals a day, always getting red meat and potatoes/bread and greens every day.

I only drink to well mixed protein drinks per day. I've read somewhere that, if not mixed properly, it can cause kidney stones.. so I make sure i mix it as long as i can(blender). Anyone else hear of this? I try to get most of my protien with solid foods.. chicken, beef, eggs, milk.. etc..
