Are deadlifts really worth doing?

I had the same problem at the begining when pulling 100 kgs. I started doing reverse hypers and helped a lot. Now I deadlift 155 kgs and have no pain at all.
I think your problem is just a weak lower back with also not good form.
Deads are great mass builder. I almost don't do ANY direct bicep work and they grew a lot from just back work.
Did you see the Strong Man competitions? Sometimes they tear a bicep when carring big weights or just pulling. Bicep is the responsable of maintaining you arm toghether when deadlifting.

ive jsut started deadlifts today was my third tiem ive done it..the first 2 times i dead lifted my muscles were sooo sore, this time its not so bad.

I have a really dodgy lower back.

WHat is the reason for this?

I really dont see how a deadlift can really be such a great mass builder, all I see it as is the daddy of building core strength.

They are a reat mass builder for the main musces used during the lift and are great for care strength as you mentioned. THis goes back to your back pain. More core strength = more spinal stability and less pain and chance of injury.

I get dodgy shooting pains down my back for no reason sometimes, and constantly have lowerback pain.

Me too. I have two herniated discs. I deadlift and it helps subside my pain. You have to go slow and lighteron the weightr and use sumo style. It is much easier on the back.

focus on squats as my core builder.
squats are as hard if not harder on your low back. Compression and twisting are the two worst things for discs.

The only thing I see a deadlift doing is giving you good core/hamstring/grip/forearm strength with a bit of trap growth
+quads, glutes, low back and upper back. I don't see how it will build bies either but I watched a guy yesterday tear his bicep muscle doing deads.

I am not a doctor, but it doesn't sound like he has a back problem. Not to mention nothing helps a back problem more than a strong back. Not being able to deadlift 225 for sets is telling me his lower back is week as shit. My lower back fuckign killed me when i started pulling. Not much you can do about that. If he really thinks he has back problems go to the doc. Most peolpe that say they have back problems have some mysterious undiagnosable problem, usually stemming from a fucking weak ass back.

Dosent sound like a back problem, huh?

He said... I get dodgy shooting pains down my back for no reason sometimes, and constantly have lowerback pain, when doing deadlifts in the past this has just made it worse

i'm not a doctor either, i also dont have a crystal ball. this cats problemz may be anything from a weak back to a non-spinal chord injury which can lead to life long debilitation. they are both great guess's so take your pick!

shooting pain = nerve, which usually = bulged or herniated disk. that = varying degrees of problems, or not; it depends.

best bet, get an mri when your pain is at its worst. until such time, stretch, work lower back with light weights and proper form, stretch, and do plenty of abs (hanging leg raises). also, from where does your back pain originate?
