Bench Press Contest Results

Couple of questions.

I have been training for a bench press contest on Nov. 22nd. I am 220lbs and lifting around 340...

My questions are:

How long should I stay out of the gym prior to the lift off?

Do you recommend the "bench shirts"?

I stop about 1/2 inch above my chest, static, then push through the positive. I have been lifting like this for years. If anyone has done this before will I have to touch my chest??

Thx bros

if it is a real bench contest you will have to touch the weight to your chest and pause it there until the head judge gives you the press command , bench shirts kick ass but i dont know if you could get used to one quick enough to use in this contest , dont bench for at least 5 days prior to the contest and i dont lift at all for 2 days prior. good luck bro------ i will leave it here for a little while so you can get some responses then it will be moved to the training forum

Yeah, as DADAWG said you will definitely have to pause it at the chest. That's the biggest thing to get used to. I think it's about a full second but it's been awhile since I trained with a power lifter.

I got into a bench contest a couple of years ago, they made you touch your chest and lift when the judge gave you the word.I had alot of fun doing it,I am not a powerlifter,I just decided to do it at the last minute,I took 1st place in my class thanks to 750mg of test and 400mg of deca a week.;)
I got some good advice from Big Andy 69 before I entered it.He advised me to go out the night before and load up on fast food,so I went to Wendy's and ate a triple cheeseburger and fries. Then I ate a good breakfast that morning, and about 30minutes before it started,I ate some honey wich he also recomended,it all worked like a charm!

I would say ditto of what DaDawg said. If it is a real powerlifting comp. than there will be three jugdes one head and two sides if you get any red lights than the lift don't count. So you better start today on going to your chest. And yes bench shirts are good it gives you a spring kinda either that or it just hurts so bad you will do anything to get that damn weight off of you. When you go down it pinches the shit out of you but you can usually get at least 10 to 15 lbs out of it. And I don't know about the fast food the night before but defintely get some good carbs about 2-3 hours before. And if you don't take a E& C stack get some for the comp it will add about 5 to 10 lbs. Believe me I know I powerlifted for 3 years. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!!!!!!

you are allowed 1 red light but not 2 , open back bench shirts are a lot more comfortable and should give a lot more than 10-15 pounds , dont load up on food until after the weigh in some contest allow day before weigh ins if so load up after then but dont load up right before lifting

That's a good point,if you have to make a certain weight class,be careful what you eat.I didn't have to worry about it where I went, the classes were strictly by age.I was in the 19-29 yr old group. They took your best lift(3 lifts)and divided it by your weight, and that was your score. You didn't have to lift the most weight, you just needed to get the highest score.I weighed exactly 200lbs at the time and benched 340,so I scored a 1.7.

Yeah DaDawg you are right I forgot our coach didn't even want us to get one and made it a point not to get any at all. B/c sometimes if one judge sees one go off then he will too. But yes watch what you eat before but be sure you eat some carbs.

if your wondering about bench meets here is a site that will help you on your bench and what to expect nice folks over there all they do is bench: metalmilitia.net

Great info. Thanks Bros.

The weigh in is on Friday then the contest is on Sat. I am going to try to get down into the 220 and below class. This isn't an official bench contest. It is for Fire Fighters and Cops. My buddy is a SWAT officer and invited me to lift. I am going to get the bench shirt on friday then should be able to get one workout in prior to the contest. Hope that is enough time to get use to it. i don't use anything when I lift on Bench Press. Just nice and slow, hit my negative, static, then my positive. I wonder if I should just X out the bench shirt since I am not use to it.

The other thing that sucks is I have been off for around 2 months now. I didn't know about the contest or I would have worked my cycle around it. I already lost 10 lbs from my last cycle...but haven't lost any strength.

My last workout, my shoulders were really hurting, that is why I am looking into a bench shirt...

thx for the advice...post if there is any more info.

Okay. I got weigh in tomorrow then the lift on Saturday. I put on the bench shirt on Monday and got 350.00 up. I am going to try 365.00 on Saturday.

I went to House of Pain in Dallas to get all my gear. They are really cool bros. and gave me alot of advise. If you need any gear I highly recomend them.

BENCH CONTEST RESULTS

Results.

I placed 3rd in my weight class. Got up 350. I kind of got screwed. My second lift was suppose to be 350, but somehow 360 was put on.

The heaviest lift was 540 w/o a bench shirt. He could have kept going, but was so far ahead of the competition there was no need.

There was another guy that weighed in at 199 and lifted 450.

It was my first comp. and for charity. I enjoyed it, and am thinking about actually training for one.

thx jock.

Yeah there was a group of guys that came up from san antonio, they had all done this a few times before.

My workout partner is about 205-210

And I have watched him do 450, no shirt with a nice long pause

I was impressed, and he is all natural, I have been trying to get him to juice, he wont cross over
