BigBen's first bodybuilding competition log

At the tender age of 42, I've decided it's now or never, and I'm planning on entering my first bodybuilding competition next May here in the UK....

As I'm on TRT now, this will obviously have to be a non-tested event. So with 11 months to go, I'm setting up this log to map out my progress as I run up to the event.

My intention is to post before, during and after pics throughout the experience.

I have signed up to a year of dietary advice and contest prep with our resident dietician 3J, and I'm stoked and so determined to make a real good fist of this. I never do things by halves!

So, I'm 5ft 8", 220lbs, 42yrs old and work as a Gym Instructor here in the UK.

I have been lifting weights for almost 25yrs on and off but have never competed. I'm normally quite a shy guy so I'm under no illusions that the posing aspect of all this is going to be the biggest ordeal.

The aims of this log are to get advice from fellow 'Ology members as to how my progress is going, relay information to other guys who are considering competing for the first time also, and to take any recommendations on any pre-competition cycles that may be worth considering as I lead up to the event.

Like I said, I'm excited at the prospect of working with 3J, he has already been extremely thorough with his questioning and after seeing his transformation successes on his website 3J's Nutrition | Diet and fitness consulting to get you to the next level. - I know I can walk on that stage looking my best.

Strengths: My arms and back have always been my strongest bodyparts and when my bodyfat is low, my abs pop nicely.

Weaknesses: Undoubtedly my legs! I have played soccer since childhood up until last year, so heavy squatting etc was never really possible. Plus I have had knee cartilage issues recently that required surgery 8 weeks ago. My aim is to really work hard to bring up my legs over the next 11 months. I also aim to bring up my upper chest, but doesn't everyone!?

Feel free to chime in guys, I'd appreciate your help along the way!

Starting pics to follow...

BigBen :)

Cool man. I used to compete years ago, I'm 62 years. The pic in you Avi looks good. I'll follow also and help if I can. Of course I will need on going pics. Tis is year away right so you have good time to get ready.

What weight class are you striving to enter? You know this effects you diet, the way you train and everything as you get closer. Remember a few months out your mass is what it is so your training will change but I see you're seasoned at this...God luck this is very cool man. :wavey:

Good luck to you bro I know you will kill it very stoked for you and will be coming to check in on here for sure :)

OK.... Now the embarrassing bit...

I've taken some pics to get the ball rolling... I'm not naive, there's LOTS of work to do, but trust me, no-one is more determined than me...

As long as I can stay injury free, I know i'll be able to present a vastly different physique come next May.

The competition I have in mind allows me to enter the 'first timers' show... I think it's an open weight category depending on the amount of entrants... thanks for the follow, I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks Schredder, I know you have a good head on those broad shoulders, I'll listen to your advice as always!

Haha, thanks man.

Well you have a good base to work with no doubt. Lots of muscle there, just a little cutting and youre gonna make a good run. And 11 months to play with, you can do a hell of a lot in that amount of time man.

Definitely jumping along for this ride

Cliche shit here but focus on the process and the product will come

Good luck bro!

A couple of people have asked what I'm currently taking...

My TRT dose is 1000mg/4ml Test Undecanoate every 4 weeks - which equates to 250mg Test weekly.
I'm also running Equipoise at 700mg weekly split into 2 x 350mg injections.
I was intending to run the Eq for at least 16 weeks and I am currently on week 5 starting to show reasonable gains, more energy and less joint pain.

I am definitely considering running my 'first' Tren cycle very soon - with four previous standard cycles under my belt I know I am ready... I just need to know how and when is best to run it.

I've read good reviews about mixing Test, Tren and Eq together - but I'm also conscious of the sides...

Any advice on this would be appreciated guys...

What a good foundation to spend the next 11 months transforming. I can't wait to see your progress, Ben. It's great you're in the UK too as your supplements will be very easy to come by. You haven't discussed HGH. When do you plan on incorporating it? It would be very beneficial to your knees as well, especially at 42. You've got 12 years on me, but if I had access to HGH I would most certainly be using it now.

3J will is obviously going to take good care of your diet. He looked after me for almost twelve months too during my contest prep in 2012 and I came up great. Supplement wise, I'd aim to squeeze a solid 20 week bulk cycle in before a cruise and then a 16 week cut. I personally have no experience with Equipoise so I can't comment on it, but I love trenbolone. It is fantastic for putting on mass. It's a brilliant idea to have a play with it during your bulk, that way it's not a shock to your system should your body not like it as you won't be incorporating it half way through a cut, which could detrimental.

Thanks Rastas...

HGH is most definitely at the forefront of my mind.... ideally at least 6 months worth approaching the contest...
Not only for longevity of the joints, but also just the great way you look when you're on it... vascular, lean, great skin etc...
The plus points really do mount up.... Obviously the cost does too though... but yes, I do intend to incorporate it at some stage...

Supplement wise, I really like what Jim Stoppani is doing lately... I'm using his pre and post workout formulas at the moment and intend to move over to his multivit and perhaps even his protein when they hit the shelves.... I currently use CNP Pro-Peptide as my main protein source - other than whole foods of course.

I was speaking to 3J a couple of days ago, and he intends for me to bulk for a while yet, gain as much muscle as physically possible... so I'm happy with this news :)

Like I said, also plan on hitting Tren soon, waiting to finalise my diet with 3J first and then I can get the ball rolling...

Thanks for your support Rastas

I tell you what...

There's nothing like setting a goal for suddenly going up a gear in the gym...

Three days, three killer workouts... Chest, Legs and Back smashed!!!!

Determined to keep up this relentless approach 'til my holiday on 1st August - I've done some research and the hotel I'm staying at has a well-equipped gym - so while the missus and daughter are doing their hair & nails, I'll be pushing on regardless :)

I'm all over this right now!

Excited about getting 3J's bulking diet and the possibility of adding Tren to my current Eq cycle after I get back mid-August.

Lots of muscle to work with here, looking forward to the progress pics!

...oh yeah +1 on the hgh recommendations. At 43 it's made a huge difference :D

Great to hear... I wish I could run it year round, but it's sooo damn pricey!

And I've learnt from past experience, that there's a LOT of bunk HGH around too :(

So, received 3J's bulking diet sheet through this evening which I will follow for the foreseeable future...

It's got a real good variation and it's fair to say I won't be going hungry! :yumyum:

New food scales and a decent frying pan ordered - lets do this!

Bulking diet starts tomorrow, I've ran a couple of trial days yesterday and today, and I literally do not seem to stop eating...
When I'm not eating I'm prepping, training or sleeping lol

I simply HAVE to grow on this intake!

Macros set at... 535g Carbs - 379g Protein - 119g Fats = Total calorie intake of 4727 calories daily.

Habuuurrrpp :chomp:
