Blood Test?

I've searched on the forums here and found what I need to test. I am considering and have done research, but I have one question.

I've called the labs, and they all say I need doctors orders to get lab tests done (acually they were all really rude nurses who picked on ring #12 and yelled at me for being stupid lol). So do I go to my family doctor and say, "Hey, I need authorization to get Cortisol, Test levels, T3 levels, lipids, etc etc etc." (Dr's post on what blood test to get).

And he'll send me to the lab? I mean, thats paying for a doc visit, paying for the lab, and the results, is this the only way to go about getting your blood tested? And, the blood test sites seem kinda iffy to me, but if someone has done it and it worked, please do tell!

I have read that thread before, and yes it did help.
I went to one of those web sites, and to get all the tests done that were suggested by the Doc, it would cost nearly 1000$? Is that average?
