cables vs. DB or BB

I have been training for approx. 1 1/2yrs. And in that time I have managed to drop my bf% from 15% to 10% and up my weight from 170lbs to 195lbs(clean). I still have alot to figure out on how my body reacts to certain things. But in the last 4-5months. I have not been able to change. I have hit a plateau. My main concern is my chest(big problem area). I recently trained with someone who got me to do a whole chest excersice on cables. I was always inder the inpression that cables were great for shaping more than bulking and to put on size the bench is where i should be. But for the last three weeks I have been trying these cable exsercises for chest. And have been getting incredible pumps, and have noticed a slight increase in size and defenition. Could this be do to the fact that I am shocking the muscles or maybe my chest reacts better to cable excersises?

Exactly the fact you are mixing things up shocks your muscles and that's good because you are getting some good results.

if it works for you and your goals, stick with it. when i first started lifting i did a lot of cable work (i didn't even know about powerlifting then) and noticed a noticeable increase in pec size.

good point , its the changeing up thats shocked your muscles and not the cables themselves .

I always start my chest workout with flat barbell bench. I'll switch dumbell and barbell incline press though. The barbell flat press is mainly to gauge my strength and the incline is more for size (looks). If I were more concerened with developing the perfect physique I would be doing all three (barbell, dumbell, cables). But since I'm more interested in strength, I stick with barbell first and dumbell a distant second.
