I have been using old "cross-training" sneakers from NewBalance for training. Soles designed to absorb some impact. But I just replaced them with a pair of Chuck Taylor, Converse AllStars and man what a difference they made when I squated yesterday. Sure footed and I actually felt stronger.

Great sneaker for squats.
Yeah you definitly don't want padding like air pockets etcfor squat. Once you get over about 400 they start to give and leave you unstable. Chucks are great.
