couple questions about gaining

these might be silly questions, but i was wondering, what puts on the weight? cals or carbs? my metabolism is outrageous! i eat 6 meals a day, if i ate say 3 times a day would that slow my metabolism? i take in between 4500-5500 cals a day right now, and ive only put on about a lb in 2 weeks, what gives? im 5'9 160lbs, 4.5-5% BF
heres my diet
8am- shake w/cup of raw oatmeal- 900 cals
11am- 5 eggs, 3 slices bacon, 2 pieces toast, 1 cup oatmeal,- 1020 cals or 4 pcs french toast, 2 eggs, and oatmeal- 1110 cals
2pm- 3 mini cheeseburgers, ham&cheese hot pocket, 1 cup hamburger helper- 945 cals
5pm- shake, cottage cheese and applesauce or fruit - 1180 cals
8pm- what ever wife wants for dinner, normally chicken breast, taters, and veggies- 6-700 cals, sometimes more
11pm- shake 900 cals

thanks

You are not eating enough! Skip the hot pockets and the junk food, eat more eggs, meat, fish and if you are not lactose intolerant adding whole milk to your diet should help you put on quality weight--that along with a heavy routine that focuses on the 3 major lifts--deadlifts, squats, and bench.

Carbs are a source of calories--either you burn more calories than you consume--lose weight, or you consume more than you burn-gain weight. Also quit counting calories--just eat more and more of high protein foods. Counting calories makes perfect sense for cutting, but for gaining you simply need to eat more--it is not that scientific.

i am taking in over 350g of protein a day, so should i concentrate on trying to get more carbs? pasta, brown rice etc? i do drink whole milk also, how much more should i eat? im already damn near forcing myself to consume this much. i was told to eat 3 large meals a day to help slow my metabolism, is this true?

thanks

How long have you been eating like this?

It takes time to put on quality mass and if I can consistently gain a pound every two weeks it put you at +26lbs for the year. Not a bad increase as long as you keep your calories clean to keep fat gain to a minimum

You are still better off eating more often, you are being too anal about your diet--350g of protein--who's counting--just eat more and more often make food that is good for you and tastes good. Eating for size should be fun, and that does not mean you need to eat a lot of junk. Get competitive about eating, try to eat more each meal even if it makes you a bit uncomfortable at first. Also as you increase your calories, you should be increasing the weights in the gym, the two will correspond, giving you muscle growth. Be patient, sometimes it just clicks and you gain more than you thought you could.

easto, ive been eating like this for 2 months, but like i said, it equals out to about a lb every 2 wks

husky, ill try and stop counting, i guess i just got used to it while making sure i was taking in the right amounts of protein etc, but now that i know what foods have what, i guess i could just stop. as far as weights, i increase almost everyweek, sometimes every 2, but i do high weight pyramid low reps. i have amazing strength for my size, hell i bench and squat more than some of the bigger guys at the gym. i guess it could be fun seeing if i can outdo myself in eating

thanks for the advice guys

a simple recommendation i made to another guy asking a similar question: just find ways to sneak "non-filling" calories into your diet. 1 tbsp of olive oil added to each of your meals means an extra 750 kcal over the course of the day. like husky said, try to drink a lot of calories as well (whole milk, gatorade, etc.) Add heavy cream or a big scoop of natural peanut butter to your shakes, etc.

If he focuses on eating clean his metabolism will process the food that much faster and it will take him that much longer to gain weight. So you gotta realize that this is a slow process(putting on "quality muscle"). I used weight gainers in the beginnning to add in calories. I was able to put on 20 lbs in a month doing so.

You put on 20 lbs but realistically only 5 was legit muscle fiber.....

Eat clean 70% of the time eat crap the other 30% if you have a fast metabolism.

So for every 10 meals you eat - 7 better be damn clean and healthy the other 3 you can pig at.

ive done pretty good, ive put on 40lbs in the last 6-7 mo and i still have a low BF, i eat pretty clean. i dont really eat out, on occasion ill order a pizza or go to mickeyD's and get a couple 1/4 lbers. except for last night i had 4 meximelts and a mexican pizza from taco hell. its just for the last two months i havent really gained shit, it just gets discouraging. thanks for all the advice guys, its appreciated

40 lbs in 6-7 months is a very nice progress. Good job.
How long have you been training?
ive been working out since high school, but my genetics are a bitch, and on top of that i was overtraining and under eating, so all i got was real strong. been lifting and eating hardcore for about a yr now. my goal weight is 210-220

Many times people think that have bad genetcs but they are simply under fed. When eating big and lifting heavy (with correct resting) they start growing. Happened to me and maybe to you too. Keep at it.

i dont know, all i know is my real dad whom i dont keep in touch with, is like 115lbs soakin wet and a brick in each hand. tho it could be that hes an alcoholic
