Just donated today and in the pre screening it said TRT patients should not donate. No long term studies to show if its safe for those receiving the blood.

Ask those ppl who turned u away if its safe for the recipient of a blood donation to receive blood from someone on SSRI or other psychotropic drugs??
I believe there is no LONG TERM DATA on that issue as well!!!!
Oh, wait those little happy pills are perfectly safe, right??
Cause doctors prescribe them with so much more love than some evil hormone.....

TESTOSTERONE has been around way longer than any SSRI...
paxil ETC....
There's been plenty of time since 1935 to study it since it was first put into injectable form...
Doctors and the medical community for years have refused to acknowledge hypogonadism as a medical condition...

I have been on trt for years and have donated every 2 months for 2 years now. There is a question on the paperwork that asks if you have ever injected anything not prescribed by your doc, but that's it.
As a matter of fact the last time my hemo was a little high and the nurse asked if I took Test. I told her yes and still not a problem.
Every state and or company may have different rules.

come on, surely none of you guys took this thread seriously.

It's one guy posting that his local clinic said it isn't required.

No studies, not even a doctor saying it...just anecdotal evidence.

Just lock the thread and move on until verified studies can be read

Its a blood donating clinic in NJ. Before I was sat down to the computer to answer the typical questions I always answer I was directed to read a piece material that talked about those on TRT should not donate. There was nothing else said other than with the lack of long term studies that it was not advised.

Ok maybe I should change the title of the thread I started to "Donating blood at MY clinic is a no go....."

I dont no who was saying it. Maybe a Dr did say it. All I know is this is what happend today and I decided to post up and share it cause why not. Why lock the thread and why not take it seriously??

He said that because it's a meaningless thread (no offence.)

Yes. My hemoglobin was 18 it was time.

Just do whatever you have to do to keep hemo in check...
Steer away from that clinic if they are giving you a hassle or just keep it under your hat....
Either/or I would like to hear what their reply would be to the SSRI/psychotropic question.

I donate platelets Sunday, I'll look into it as they MUST follow FDA regulations. I've been donating for years, and all the girls know I'm on TRT, so it would be interesting if such a line existed.

On the bright side, as long as the words "shall, must, cannot, forbidden" don't appear, it's just a recommendation. :)

Edit: per the FDA:

FDA said:
Allow individuals on prescription testosterone to donate blood and blood components more frequently than every eight weeks without examination or certification of health by physician at time of donation, provided the donor is referred with a prescription by a physician containing instructions regarding frequency of phlebotomy and*hematocrit/hemoglobin limits*and to be exempt from placing special labeling about the donor’s disorder on the blood components. This approval is granted under the condition that only the Red Blood Cells collected from these individuals may be distributed; the plasma and platelet components from these individuals should not be distributed for transfusion.

That's for guys that REQUIRE a phlebotomy, which means the rest of us are okay to donate freely. I always thought that requiring a therapeutic phlebotomy was the kiss of death, I guess it's either up to the manager on shift, or they don't know.
