dumbell punching? wtf?

i see people doing some goofy looking shit in the gym. if its a big guy i just assume he knows what he's doing because it's working for him. more often than not, it's a total goofball.

i've seen a few guys hold 15-20# dumbells in their hands and punch at the mirror. then they dance around like rocky and look at their chest.

anyone seen this before? anyone done it? wtf is the point?

try it. Its a good workout
i do it at the end of arm work outs. its boxing training. meant to help you be able to keep you hands up longer. an endurance typa thing. but over time adds a little bit of size and alotta bit of cuts....

with that being said "then they dance around like rocky and look at their chest." ....idiots.

Done it, but not too often. Typical boxing training. The dancing around is probably shadowboxing, and the looking at the chest is probably either looking at ones own footwork, or keeping your chin pressed to your body, a protective stance.

If someone who isn't a boxer watches it, I agree it looks foolish :p

the guys i've seen doing it aren't the boxing type. they're the guys maxing out at 115 pounds on a flat bench before they box with DBs.

maybe i'll give it a try. prolly not though....

... because those guys just watched the Rocky Balboa movie... :)

Regardless of how "stupid" one may look it's a good work out and if you do get into street/ bar fights, then you'll be hella surprised how much faster and stronger your punch is.

But, unfortunately, most guys that do that leave with minimal exercise and an inflated ego.

Better for me.

There's no such thing as tough. There's prepared and unprepared, that's it.

is there a right way to do it? like should u stay symetricall or in the typical jab and then right postition? and do u extend fully and how hard?

im gonna start boxing/kick boxing soon so im curious.

I've seen boxers do it, and some sprinters do it too since sprinting is a lot more in the upper body than people care to think. I do it out of season (I sprint over 400m) and its a great workout, but I usually do a mini-circuit of 10 reps of 5 seperate shoulder exercises and repeat it 4 times. I found I got a lot bigger in my upper body...

As for the workout, it doesn't matter much in what position you stand. Since you are going to box, I would prefer the boxing position; since that is the position you will be punching in. Make it an automatism to stand like that. You can extend fully as long as you don't put too much stress on your joints by doing so. I like to vary speed and weight.

great exercise. 20 lbs is to heavy though imo. stick to 10 to 15. personal experience I never fully extend because when jabbing it caused a slight popping in my elbow. not a nice feeling. it helps increase your speed a whole lot and with that added speed you generate a lot more power behind your punches. a few weeks of this and you'll see that heavy bag swingin around a lot more than usual.

I mean if your going to worry about that. just switch positions and stand southpaw and jab with your other arm. personally I haven't seen a difference.
