great point. it is better to think of it in terms of total calorie intake. Perhaps it's the quality of the carbohydrates ingested that matters more; i.e., high glycemic index types that spike blood glucose, and leave the person craving more food later on after the surge subsides. Of course, repeated cycles of this behavior lead to the metabolic syndrome and the development of type II diabetes (complete with central obesity). To overgeneralize, we are a nation of fatties.
and to correct my earlier statement: glucose doesn't come from beta-oxidation (but small carbohydrate chunks do, which are then fed into the TCA cycle).
