Filtering without Whatmans???

RJ

On Vacation
Hey guys, just bouncing around some ideas after looking at PBs old setup.

Is there a system I can buy that will allow me to make my batches, large or small, and filter with say a vacuum pump without using a whatman (or similar type) filter? Frankly I am just tired of buying those damn things. lol

So do you just need a vacuum pump for those to work? The illustration looks kind of unclear. Do you have to buy new cups for every batch?

Nevermind, it looks like you buy the prefilters which are about $1.5/ea. That's better than $5 for the whatmans.

So would you just need a vacuum pump, prefilters and the stericup filter unit? Then hook the pump up to the stericups, pour in the brew and filter away? Is it that easy? Hell that setup is less than $100 if that's the case. Think my lab might just use on of those instead.

PB, you gots any thoughts on this.

the stericup has a filter in it. the cup is about 15 bucks and a 1 shot deal. the prefilter is just that. its not he real deal. the stericups noramlly come with .2 micron filters.

well you can get 100 syringe filters for about 175 bucks from fischer. that cheap enough?

i wont even tell you how many boxes i went thru over the years. =0l

Gotcha, can I still use another way (vacuum pump maybe) to filter the solution? I hate pushing that shit through with my thumbs. Can you post a pic/explanantion of your oldsetup again, or just email it to me?

i took the pic down when i closed up shop. deleted it too. clean pc. lolololol cept for this board being bookmarked.

once you get everything we'll do a phone call.

what is fischer?

Also, how many MLs do you usually get out of a whatman? Do you go until you cant get any more through (if so, where is that number usually), or do you have a set limit that you dont excede?

Depends on batch. Usually 100ml or so. Sometimes more, sometimes less. When they clog, you'll surely know it. Its a complete hastle to try to filter through a clogged whatman.

I have a vacuum pump that I use for bleeding my brakes, that would work great, gauge and all. I too get tired of huge syringes and the whatmans.
